i am editing a short film being shot dvcpro50 with an sdx900 camera. i have access to a swanky avid edit system, but i also run vegas at my studio, and would like to possibly use it inthe post end somehow.

can vegas capture dvcpro50, 24p progressive scan footage from the deck via firewire??? thts the thing, its supposed to be near uncompressed video via firewire withthis format, so..

any help would be great, this is the first time weve done post at our studio with this format, and if anyone has any input at all, it would be fantastic to here from ya'll

You sure AVID takes it via firewire ? I Thought it was a FCP deal.

I think the answer is "no". I don't think Vegas supports the DVCPro50 codec.

You could always try the MainConcept DVCPro 25/50 DV Codec at http://www.mainconcept.com/codecs.shtml#dvcpro.
A download demo is available. BTW, it's $350.00 for the full version.
From the MainConcept site:
"The MainConcept DVCPro 25/50 DV Codec is our new product for our amateur and professional customers working with high end Video. DVCPRO50 delivers considerably higher picture quality since it uses less compression than DV. The Codec comes with a full-featured DirectShow filter. It is compatible with any program which supports the standard DirectShow interface. "

>>> You could always try the MainConcept DVCPro 25/50 DV Codec...<<<

One could do that, however there seem to be issues with this codec. For one it does not show up or work under Vegas. It doesn't show up in too many programs overall. It does show up as an option in the Main Concept Mpeg Encoder and it will capture using that...I have tested it and it does work. A bit funky, but workable.

I have not seen any sort of update for the codec to resolve the issues people were having. Here is the response from Main Concept in December: http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=234673&Page=0

That was the last word on the issue. Version still is 3.0.9 - same as it was.

Thanks for the info Dave.
Just a few issues with that codec :-(
Too bad really because I know a few folks who could make use of it.
