Panning Herkey Jerks

Movick wrote on 6/25/2007, 1:37 PM
Hey all,

Of late I've been experiencing a strange issue with my DV footage when I capture to VV5. Shots containing lateral pans playback very jerky in what could be described as a “stop and go motion.” When I first noticed this issue, I thought my PD-150 had a transport problem from a spill it had taken, and rather than waiting for the 4-6 week repair turnaround I purchased a new XL2 instead. I know this new XL2 couldn’t possibly have the same technical problem as I thought the PD-150 did, therefore something’s probably going on with my system. This issue appears in capture, timeline playback and in rendered video files.

Does anyone have any idea as to what can be the cause of this issue? What can I do to correct this?

Thanks in advance!

Can you post a brief clip so we can see what you're talking about?

First thing, play the tape back in the camera connected to a monitor. If it still looks jerky, check the camera's shutter speed.

Try changing the resolution of your playback to DRAFT.

It will probably pan smoothly, altho looking blurry. This will simply prove that the footage is ok. If this is the first time you've seen this problem, check the properties on your edit. They may be incorrectly set.

Once you render your job, if it looks smooth in DRAFT mode, it will render out smoothly and beautiful.

He originally stated:

"This issue appears in capture, timeline playback and in rendered video files."

So he has already tried rendering the footage first.

Do you have the properties set to Progressive scan or an incorrect framerate by chance? Set them to default and try a small loop render.

Dumb question, but have you have been shooting slow pans with Image Stabilization switched on?

Not a dumb question at all. This "feature" has bit more videographers than you can shake a stick at.

Possibly "field order" setting reversed somewhere?

Grasping at straws here, but have you changed the Undersample rate of your clips?
