PAR problem

JS wrote on 5/12/2012, 6:25 AM
I’m rendering a 720p Vegas file (.MOV, H.264, 23.976fps) to 720p mp4 (23.976), consistently selecting a pixel aspect ratio of 1.000. The render is STRETCHED HORIZONTALLY in VLC and Windows Media Player (but not Quick Time). Importing the rendered file to Vegas, I see the PAR reported as 1.33, which is not even an option for rendering an mp4 in this frame size. No such problem rendering with Main Concept or WMV. I'm using Vegas Platinum 10 and Windows 7. What am I missing?

Look at your media properties in the Project Media pane.
If the aspect is incorrectly flagged (which is rare), change it to the correct aspect.
I assume the aspect is set correctly in advanced render properties?

I guess you figured out that my problem is with Sony AVC, although I neglected to specify it by name. Also, for what it’s worth, when I look at the pixel aspect of the rendered/stretched clip in Vegas, it actually reads “1.33 (HDV 1080).”

I checked the media properties in the Project Media pane; there is nothing on either tab that indicates anything other than 1280x720, PAR 1.000. When you say “advanced render properties,” I assume you mean everything on the “Custom” tabs. Again, 1280x720, PAR 1.000 all around.

I made up a Vegas test file with just one short clip in it: rendered with Main Concept, fine; rendered with AVC, stretched. Time to re-install?

HDV 1080 is 1440x1080 @ 1.333 PAR.
So you shouldn't render using that preset.

There is another preset that is 1280x720 @1.0 PAR which is what I think you want.
Or, if you need to, set up a custom template something like this:

Setting you Project properties a certain way does not set your Render properties. Begin by going to File->Render As.

With respect, you misunderstood. I did not render using the 1440x1080 @1.33 PAR preset; I used the 1280x720 @1.0 PAR preset you’re suggesting. What I said was that, when I put the rendered video—the “stretched” mp4—on the Vegas timeline, it showed the PAR as 1.33 DESPITE my having selected 1.0 in the Render properties. And I tried to indicate that I checked the Render properties INDEPENDENTLY of the Project properties.

OK then, its the other way around ;?)

You must match your Project properties to your Media settings to view it in its proper aspect in the Vegas Preview (that's what I didn't get from your question), again Vegas does not do this for you.

Also, if there is a box checked in your preview settings that says "adjust source media to better match project or render settings" or something similar, uncheck it.

If you still have problems, upload a short sample of your rendered video somewhere so other users can have a look at it.
