Patchy Firewire Output

I just installed a new motherboard (the Spacewalker AK32, from Shuttle). This is the only change I have made to my system. Previous to this installation, the "Print to Tape" function worked just fine; VidCap saw my DV camera and offloaded my AVI files beautifully. After the upgrade, suddenly I get artifacts all over the screen, both previewing and printing. The odd thing is that VidCap still captures FROM the camera TO the computer just fine. Anyone run into this before? Any suggestions?

Lacking other suggestions, have you tried a fresh windows install? Usually a good idea when changing a mobo.

I have had the same problem and I suggest it is worth switching out the firewire cable just as a test. These cables are very finicky, touchy, and crap out quite often...especially the cheap ones that I buy.

Do you have an extra cable you could try out?

If you changed your motherboard, then probably your IDE hard drive controller got swapped too. maybe you're slower now. I found that output is very critical on speed. I have 2 different IDE paths and different speed drives. Using one slightly slower causes bad output. Shutting down as much as possible made a BIG difference. Using the faster drive and everything was OK.

So that might be the problem OR when you changed things, you changed your Windows settings and now other things are running in the background, slowing you down.

If your firewire is on the motherboard, it could have a different throughput.

Interrupt settings can also make a difference.

So I guess there is a lot to look at but it all comes down to something going slower than before.

Capture always was OK, same as you see. Capture is not as critical on speed. Maybe you could miss a frame, but when outputting, if the firewire data stream gets interrupted, then the video gets hosed for a while.

I gave that a shot, no dice. Hm. I'll see if I can get ahold of a third one... maybe that will be the charm. Thanks.

That makes a lot of sense... I have 3 HDs, and all of them are 7200RPM. How would I go about finding out how to fix a slow IDE path from them?
