pci parity error

i am running Vegas on a W98 2nd edition system with a Gina
sound card and a scsi drive.

when i first installed the scsi card & drive, i ran into
trouble with system crashing and parity error messages.
After lots of trial and error, it seemed that the problem
was with a specific PCI slot. I simply switched PCI slots
and all has been swell...
until now.

coindidentally or not, i recently got a new SCSI drive (not
card, but drive)...i have had several successful sessions
with this drive, however, the last couple sessions have
been plagued with parity error system crashes...

i am not certain it relates to the SCSI drive because even
when i tried to do work on the internal drive (not
recording, just playback), the system crashed. (though now
the morning after, i am thinking that althought the Vegas
file and all related sound files were saved off the SCSI
drive--Vegas may have been using the sound files still
located on the SCSI drive as i had not changed any settings)

is it the sound card/scsi card relationship???

any ideas???

help...

Hello Stuart.

I don't feel that these problems are related to Vegas, it sounds like
some sort of hardware conflict that you are experiencing in your
system.

You could contact echo audio (the makers of the Gina) and see if they
have any advice for this.

You are receiving a PCI parity error report? Could you describe the
msg/screen displayed?

Parity erorrs are typically memory errors. If you are getting a
memory parity error blue screen, then you could have a bad memory
chip.

thanks for the help.

it is not a blue screen, but a black screen with about 7 lines at the
top all reading "pci parity error."

it only happens when the sound card is engaged...could it be too much
info...scsi and sound for the pci slots to handle...
i really dont know what to do.

my next step is to make sure i have all the most recent drivers for
everything, then i am going to switch my scsi adapter to a different
slot and peek aroung the device manager...

i really just want to work through this...this is the absolute most i
will ask this system to do...and it should be able to handle it
(450mhz, 128 ram, PentIII).

I would be willing to bet my Tiny Tim backstage pass that this is not
a Vegas problem, nor is it likely a memory chip error. I am not that
much of a computer geek, but we did have a couple of ComPAQ's
DeskPro's that exhibited this error until I finally narrowed it down
to defective PCI Bus daughter cards ... something ComPAQ support was
never able to do.

Unfortunately, this is one of those error message that is normally
self explanatory ... usually the result of what it says, a parity
error on the PCI Bus. While generally a hardware issue, possibly
indicating an upcoming hardware failure, or a bad bus as was the case
with us, it can also be DMA (direct memory access)related and your
PCI sound card may well be causing the problem, if not the root
of it, as you suspect ... particularly if it uses DMA to buffer the
audio while the CPU does other tricks ... I would certainly try
swapping the PCI cards in the system around to see if you can solve
the problem that way.

As side note, I could load Win98 all day on one of the afflicted
machines, but NT 4 barfed at the network configuration part of the
installation without fail due to the PCI NIC's we were using ... put
in an older ISA network card and the problem would appear to go away.

Not much solace, but hopefully it will give you an area to
troubleshoot that may narrow your problem down.
