PCM & Vegas 13

richard-dyszel wrote on 11/17/2016, 11:42 AM

I've read a lot about the no audio with AVI problem and one recommended solution is to add the correct codec. I'm using Black Magic Intensity Pro for capture and it captures AVI audio as PCM. I thought that this was uncompressed raw wav audio and therefore there should be no codec needed. So, how do I get Vegas 13 to play PCM audio.

Got no problems with PCM (wav files)

Do you have MediaInfo to display details?

Should be no issue...

Can you provide a small sample here so we can test it? (30 seconds is enough)

That's what I was thinking. This doesn't work in 11 or 13. PCM is so standard 'old school.' Here's a shorter, but similar file.

set wrote on 11/17/2016, 9:46 PM

'Old school' but still a professional standard choice.

hmmm, when uploaded here, the video has been converted to MP4... not original anymore... you need to upload in Google Drive / Dropbox to keep it as AVI.

OK, but you just went way past my knowledge base. What can I or should I do with this new code to solve the problem?

set wrote on 11/18/2016, 3:56 PM

Thanks richard-dyszel, I have downloaded the WeTransfer file.

I can confirm in VP13 & VP14, audio is missing...

  1. No problem when played back with Win10's Media player (Movies & TV)
  2. Try using free Catalyst browse... no match template to convert this footage (since the sample is just 720x486-29.97i) - but if you have 1920x1080-29.97i resolution, perhaps you can try convert it to XAVC Long.
  3. Even DaVinci Resolve 12.5 also unable to read the audio.
  4. HitFilm4Express failed to read the audio correctly.

Ok, I haven't found any solution on this... need to research more...

I able to use VLC Media Player to Convert (Media>Convert / Save) the audio portion to WAV (you may need to manually create this template):

Might not be the BEST solution, as you have more additional work..., but at least it is now working... and you have 2 separate files - one video and one audio.

Thank you so much for doing this research. Last year, we were moving and I used the Intensity Pro to capture a bunch of shows on my DVR. I was able to lay them onto the timeline and edit them without problem using Vegas 11. Frankly everything I've ever laid on a Vegas time line has worked. This is why I'm so confused over this new situation. I woud swear that I have captured video using this card before and edited it with Vegas. But I aslo have to admit that time flies and versions don't necessarily fit the timeline.

I'm aware of the conversion fix, but I still feel there must be some way to do this withour the extra step.  I keep wondering if some box has been check.....or unchecked in the program that will make all things right.  Having seen many posts on this forum and on the web in general, I'm curious as tho why Magix, in the process of correcting the 30 bugs they found, didn't fix this one, considering that PCM predates Windows.....sigh.

Quitter wrote on 11/18/2016, 11:11 PM

I think, this is not a Vegas problem, i think it's a problem of your Black Magic Intensity Pro that is doing the output.
Make a google search with "Codec ID: 00001000-0000-0100-8000-00AA00389B71" and you will see, how many people have problems with the audio, not only with Vegas

Are you sure, that your old files (working with VP11) are the same as the new files?

I would recommend updating the firmware of your Intensity Pro, but I can't tell you what exactly you need to download to do that. Their support site doesn't help much, unless I misunderstand: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/family/capture-and-playback

richard-dyszel wrote on 11/19/2016, 7:32 AM

I'm not sure exactly what the files were that I pulled off the DVR. I just assumed they were the same, but maybe not.  I'm going to go back to Balck Magic after I get a bit more info. I want some of my friends who use Premiere, Final Cut and other editors to see what happens when they put this file on their timelines. With this list of info I'll go back to Black Magic and see what they say.  In the meantime I'm still waiting for Magix to respond to the MediaInfo they requested.  Thanks for al the help.

richard-dyszel wrote on 12/1/2016, 12:04 PM

Hi,
It took a little work on my part, but I have found the problem and the solution. Blackmagic kept saying it was a Vegas problem and Vegas has not responded, but since I knew I had used this card successfully with Vegas in the past, I started loading legacy versions of the Blackmagic software.  Version 10.3.4 from 2014 works just fine...both audio and video. Somewhere between that version and the current version, 10.8.3 they screwed it up for Vegas.

Thank you for your help.

I've had this same exact problem multiples of times from both BlackMagic recorders (multiple products), and certain Canon cameras recording to .mts files. All were 24bit LPCM audio.

In all cases, extracting the audio to its own .wav file allowed editing since in none of these cases did Vegas correctly display the audio from the original .avi or .mts file.

You don't even need VideoRedo ... ffmpeg will extract audio easily, and for free.
