pcmcia firewire card and laptop

Anyone succeeded at Printing Video to Tape from a laptop through a pcmcia firewire card (using Vegas 4).

I managed to capture video through my pcmcia firewire card without any dropped frames, although when I print to tape, only the camera will start recording with a blue screen, no video!
I have tried different parameters in the Print to Tape preferences tab, but no sucesss. I also updated the bios and pcmcia drivers, but still no video.

I own an Averatec 3150 from which I do video editing with external usb2 drives, and it just works great for this matter.

Processor AMD Mobile Athlon XP-M 1600+ Processor with PowerNow!™ Technology and QuantiSpeed™ Architecture
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Display 12.1" XGA TFT
Memory 256 MB DDR
Hard Drive 30GB, 9.5mm thin

Any ideas at what can go wrong???

Thanks,
Robert

If you're trying to PTT from an external drive, especially USB2 connected, try copying your file to C and PTT from there. That's a workaround I've had to use, still use actually. Also, don't PTT from an onboard firewire port, try a PCI adaptor port. DGrob

DGrob, I did try copying the file to my C drive as opposed to the USB2 drive and PTT, but unfortunately it didn't work. Robert

A lot depends on your drive. With my Western Digital Firewire drive, I get exactly the same results (problems) that you have. With my Maxtor Firewire, I can print to tape with no problem. My guess is that the problem lies with the drive, not with your PCMCIA 1394 card in your laptop.

BTW, you cannot use print to tape via USB2. I'm pretty sure you have to be connected via a Firewire connection. I wasn't clear on which connection you are actually using, since you mentioned USB2 a couple of times.

I had a very similar problem earlier today. I was wondering if the pcmcia card got overheated - if that is even possible. I also thought that it might have to do with the speed of my internal HD - I know it is not as fast as most tower harddrives. I was able to PTT for just a few seconds then I started getting the same blue screen, and when I played back the video it had a bunch of digital artifacts and errors. I am using a Sony dcr-trv17 miniDV camera. The pc card is a generic IEEE 1394 I got from NewEgg.com. I am trying to work out the problem here and if I can get it to work, I will send you info, but if you find any useful info please post. Thanks

I am using an HP nx9005

Linguisticat,

You didn't provide the most important piece of information: the make and model of your external hard drive. As I have reported in previous posts, the PTT and External Monitor functions can be defeated by certain Firewire drives. If I connect my Western Digital WD800, I get the same problems you have reported. If instead I connect my Maxtor "One Touch," everything works just as well as if I were capturing, previewing, and PTT from an IDE drive.
