Options - Preferences - Close media files when not the active application.
When this check box is selected, files can be edited in external editors (audio, image, etc.) while they are contained in events on the Vegas timeline.

Or go to Rosebud's site and grab his excellent Open In Graphic Editor script.

Under Options / Preferences check "Close media files when not the active application"?

"Under Options / Preferences check "Close media files when not the active application"?"

OK, that is working about 50% of the time

the other 50% I get this error message

"an error occurred opining the media file"

anyone know how to address the psd

"an error occurred opining the media file" bug?

when it occurs, vegas puts the psd offline and will not even let me re import it. i then have to change the name of the file from photoshop or remove the file from the project media bin and re-import it into the project.

by the way, this is in vegas 9 or Vegas 10

no one else has this bug when updating photoshop graphics?

If someone could please verify if they can reproduce this issue I would really appreciate it.

Vegas 9 or 10
Photoshop CS5

create multi-layered PSD including text and shapes
import to vegas
open PSD and tweak
save in photoshop
return to vegas

if you are getting the same results as me over 50% of the time I get an error when I return to vegas.

it stands to kill my workflow so I am desperate for some sort of workaround.

Works fine here.
I am currently working on a "Marauder's Map" effect and I have over 100 tracks imported from one PSD file.

I opened a new Vegas (10e) project, dragged the Photoshop PSD file into the timeline - across tracks. Opened the same PSD file and made a change on one of the layers and saved the PSD file. In Vegas, the changes I made appeared in the Vegas project.

It didn't matter where the cursor was in Vegas. I did it twice.

Are you sure the file isn't open somewhere else?
Have you tried removing unused media from the Project Media window?

Try this:

create multi-layered PSD including text and shapes
import to vegas
open PSD and tweak
save in photoshop
close in photoshop
return to vegas

seems to be a good work around (with very limited testing)

i did verify that it did not do the same thing in a fresh project but since my project is already laid out / cut that doesn't help me much....

I'll have to keep testing
