The aspect ratio dosen't need to change. What are the subjects like. Do you want a master view that is full sreen and then three across the bottom? Maybe a four screen split, but five is better with a center one at a larger size. Four is hard to get a focus with. You really need a master view that gives your audience a sense of comfort with the others available to peek at. That is stricktly an artistic opinion and everyone will disagree with me and their opinion will be valid as well.

I agree. But there are ways to achieve that with four even pictures:
1. The action your eyes will consentrate on in the previous (unsplit) picture is continued or replaced at the same spot, so your eyes don't have to search for a new place to rest.
2. One of the four pictures is cropped or zoomed in from the previous (unsplit) picture, gradually revealing the other three.
