Pictures show up RED

I teach high school history and we are doing a "video year book" for this years Seniors. We are using Vegas Movie Studio 8.0. We scanned photos on a separate computer and moved them, via a thumb drive. We then tried to put them into Movie Maker and some of the pics are fine, some show up as all RED. I have looked at things like formats and size and there seems to be no rhyme or reason. Anyone have this happen to them? Anyone have any thoughts?

Vegas likes .png format stills and does not particularly like really large (resolution) stills.

Is there any chance that some of the photos are "offline". Like perhaps you had the thumbdrive plugged in when you imported them into Movie Studio, and now the thumbdrive is gone and VMS can't find the photos? Maybe you copied them to the local drive, but you accidentally imported from the thumbdrive? (If this is the case, however, then at startup VMS would probably tell you it can't find the files, and would ask you to specify a new location.)
