Pillars seen on rendered videos

When I rendered a project to an AVI file, although the aspect ratio matched by video footage, I got small pillars on each side of the output. The video was 640 x 480. How can I get rid of them?

If your source was widescreen, then you export at a widescreen resolution, that is, 640x360 instead of 640x480

Nope it wasn't wide screen; it was standard 4:3 aspect ratio. I re-rendered the video as an .mov file and there are no pillars seen--but for some reason Vimeo does not want to upload the video :(. I have a premium membership there so I know I'm within my file limits, etc.

If the video was 4:3, then use the right project properties (use the "match media" icon in that dialog), and then export using the iPod VGA template.
