Pioneer 106D DVD Burner Firmware

DavidPJ wrote on 3/16/2004, 8:15 AM
I have a Pioneer A06 DVD burner and I've read that manufacturers often upgrade the firmware of the DVD R/W drives to fix bugs, improve performance, capability, etc.

Does anyone know how to check what version of firmware this drive is running? I checked Pioneer's web site and it doesn't show any available firmware updates for the drive.

Thanks.

The latest firmware for the 106D is 1.07. If you check this page you can download the version checker.

Thanks JohnnyRoy! I don't know how I missed this Pioneer page. My drive was running 1.05 and I upgraded it to 1.07.

Just curious.

Nero says I have the Pioneer DVD-RW DRV-106RD installed. I’ve attempted to download the 1.07 firmware update (over the 1.05 version I have) numerous times and even with the FirmwareVersionChecker I read about and downloaded from this thread, I get “NO DVD-RW drive found” error.

?????

Obviously I have the drive installed, and burning with no problems.

Download the small "checker" program from Pioneer and run it and let it tell you what it finds and also what it recommends for firmware. Don't load up anything that it does not recommend.

Yeah, I did that.

Does anyone think that because I have the 106RD (not the 106D) matters? Heck, I have no idea what the "R" means anyway.

I did some poking around the net and the consensus seems to be that the 106RD is an ACER 3rd party drive and you need to get your firmware updates from them. The thread I was reading is here. One of the posts has a link to the 106RD 1.07 firmware.

I'm not sure about your model, but, rliagas, is your drive functioning properly? If so, you might want to avoid flashing it needlessly. You could cripple it. That checker program I mentioned is the best thing to run. After running it, be sure to click or highlight your drive on the drive list so the specs and firmware recommendations appear in the lower box. If it says your firmware does not need to be updated then you're okay.

I don't know about Acer-branded drives, but I bought last year a Cendyne-branded Pioneer 105 drive. I recently loaded Pioneer firmware into it, and it flashed just fine. Blows the warranty, of course, but with the way these things keep getting obsoleted, I don't care. I won't have any one unit more than a couple of years, anyway.

Thanks for the link I didn't even know the drive firmware was upgradable.

Well, I ran the UPGDVD.EXE file but nothing happens -- still have firmware 1.05 according to Nero. No biggy, really. This isn't do-or-die. I just double-clicked the exe file, a fast (like a flash) DOS screen opened/closed, and that was it. Nothing changed as far as I know.......
