A lot of the times I want to drag a longer clip onto a crowded timeline, which can cause issues and bugs with in-between fades for the clips. This is why I put those clips at the end, edit the smaller part I need and squeeze it in where I need it. A little secondary placeholder timeline would come in handy, like a sketchbook, to prepare a clip before I feel ready to drag it directly to where I need it.

Yes ... it's already there (at least it is in MVP13) and is called the Trimmer Window. You can access the Trimmer Window from View/Windows, and the Trimmer Window can be docked along with the other windows like the Preview Window, Explorer, Video FX, Transitions, etc.
Personally I've never been comfortable with the Trimmer Window. I've never got it to place trimmed clips properly on the timeline.
@StathisTector What I do is make sure Rippling is OFF then drag the clip to an empty track above. Trim it, stretch it etc then drag it down to where I want it. Also I use the numeric keypad for moving clips up and down and for precise moving and trimming of clips. By precise I mean when I want to move or trim by only a few frames.

It takes a little getting used to but it has all the features I need, especially just select a piece of audio. This will help me greatly!! Can you believe I've used this program for over ten years and never used the trimmer window? I'm the biggest a-hole!
