Is upgrading to a newer version of Movie Studio an option for you?

Marco,

No - what's the point?

I am able to do everything I need in the current version (i.e 12). My problem is not with Movie Studio per se, it is with the fact that I lost a batch file I had written some time ago and forgotten about since it resided in the System folder of Windows .

The only reason I might consider upgrading is if :

(1) When Movie Studio is set as the default video player, then

(2) Movie Studio will open a video file (that is not linked to any project) when clicked upon from Windows Explorer, so that

(3) Movie Studio AUTOMATICALLY opens a default template / creates a new project that has settings to match all those of the video being opened (e.g. resolution, frames per second and copyright statement).

Since that appears to be a requirement unique to myself, I can't see it being included in a new version of Movie Studio, so upgrading would not solve my specific problem - which can be solved by writing a small script in a DOS batch file.

My original query was based on the fact that I thought I had managed to do this with a simple setting inside Movie Studio - but Musicvid and J-V showed me that I was wrong, and the solution was outside Movie Studio.

Later Movie Studio versions do automatically adapt project properties to the first media added to the project, so I think this actually could help you. I will try if this works with such kind of batch files later or if WMV files are set to open with Movie Studio.

Just tested. If I link *.wmv files with Movie Studio 14 (or 15), on double-click it would open with Movie Studio and the project properties of Movie Studio are automatically adopted to the WMV media file.

Of course it would work same way when using a DOS batch file but I think you would not even need it.

Just to wrap up this topic, Marco was correct. Version 15 addresses the issues perfectly. If you set up a default template (with the correct copyright data, author etc) in Movie Studio, you can the use Windows Explorer to open any video file whose extension you have linked to open in Movie Studio. On the first occasion it asks if you want to adjust the project settings to match the media, and also whether you want to do this every time you open a file - if you say YES to both, then it works perfectly thereafter. It keeps all the copyright data, but just changes the resolution and speed.

So I have upgraded to Version 15 and am now happy..

Thanx Marco,
