Platinum 8 and Canon HF100

I just bought a new Sony Vaio, 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 Processor, 3 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium. In the past on my older e-machines, I have edited Hi8 video with no problem, using Platinum 7 (i guess).

I planned to get an HD camera, looking at the Canon HF100. As soon as I got this computer, I added Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8.0 to start editing on this machine. But in reading posts here and other forums, I am not sure Vegas can edit video from the HF100 so easily.

It has been so easy to edit using Vegas Platinum and the Hi8 video. But should I use a different program with the HF100 or should I get a different camera in order to use Vegas Platinum? Or do I need to upgrade to the "PRO" version of Vegas? Will it handle it at all?

I think you'd need Movie Studio Platinum 9 to edit the HF100 footage as this is AVCHD video. I suppose Movie Studio 8 only supports AVCHD taken from Sony cameras. AVCHD support of cameras other than Sony came with version 9.

I suppose I should upgrade to Platinum Pro Pak. I love the Canon camera but only if I can edit with it.

Hi

I have 2 of theese cameras, and I have edited 'native' AVCHD on my quadcore 2.4 GHz with Vegas 8. It's possible, but I would not call et a breeze. If you have bigger complex projects with a more than 2 tracks, I would consider converting the AVCHD first to something else.

You can f.ex. get something called AVC Upshift from www.vasst.com that will convert to HDV of some kind which is easier to edit.

I also have this camera and use Vegas 8 pro. AVCHD editing is not quite the same experience as SD in AVI format but I can get the job done. I've only been working with this camera a few weeks so I have been looking into ways to convert the AVCHD format to something less cumbersome. I also have a quad core 2.4 with 4 gigs of ram on windows xp.

I'm starting to wonder if moving to vista for video editing might be a good move as well. I need to keep XP around for my recording studio business in any case. Video is just a side-line/hobby.

I haven't bought the camera yet. I wanted to see about editing before putting out the cash. I like Vegas working with SD video. Obviously HD is the future. That is one reason I bought this new computer, to work on video editing in HD.

My two SD cameras are about to give up the ghost. I wish there were a way to edit HD video as easily as SD video. I am having to think about and consider too many more variables than with the video editing I have done so far. Understand that I do simple editing, home movie stuff mostly...titles, credits, deleting scenes and that kind of stuff.

Unless there is something better, I will probably go ahead and get this Canon HD camera! Any other suggestions are appreciated.

As mentioned in my posting above you'd need at least Movie Studio Platinum version 9 to edit that kind of footage. You don't necessarely need Vegas Pro.

Great advice. As soon as I get the camera, I will upgrade to v9 Platinum. They keep lowering the price on the camera so I expect a new version/model out in the Spring. But ya know, with new technogy, you can put it off and put it off until years go by. When HD camcorders broke the $1000 price barier, that is what most folks (and I) were waiting for.
