Playback and Sync

In DVDA 4.0 Bld 125. two things are driving me nutz.

1. When I try to preview the project, or play from the timeline I get a dialog saying,

"An error occurred while starting playback. The device specified is in use."

dont know if it refers to audio or video device, but everything plays fine in Vegas and Sound Forge and has for a long time. Oddly when I vclick on the OK in this dialog, occasionally playback starts. although it never happens in Project Preview when I clik on the image of the remote or on the menu button. Cant figure out what I do to make that happen.

How do I get sensible playback?

2. When I DO get playback, audio and video are out of sync. Audio's always several seconds late. this is a short (10 min) project I shot, edited (in Vegas) and burned to MPEG 2 and AC3 myself.

I've read a few posts similar to this, but they're a few years and versions old and were never answered.

Does anyone have an answer to these questions?

Thanks.

Haven't had this happen in DVDA, but have had what I *think* might be similar errors in other software... I think that the problem is due to driver issues, though codec related problems could contribute to it.

Repeating once again that I'm lousy at troubleshooting... I have come across problems with software using a device and sort of holding onto it after the software was closed -- think I'd check first for anything running that might be associated with either audio or video devices, & if there wasn't anything I could shut down, try re-starting windows. As an example, I had a problem last night where Vegas wouldn't render AC3, & it turned out Media Info hadn't/wouldn't shut down.

After making sure I was using the latest drivers, another thing I'd check would be any other AC3 software -- have had Sony Creative software clash with AC3 Filter for example... simply renaming the AC3 Filter folder is a quick way to find out. For that matter I've sometimes found it useful to rename any other folders with mpg2 related software -- had an AC3 clash between DVDA 4b & DVDLab Pro 2 trial recently that I found that way.
