Playback Glitches and Freezes - VP 12 and 13?

KRyan wrote on 6/21/2015, 5:40 PM
I've just been sort of living with this problem, assuming my computer just doesn't have enough horsepower. But now it's really becoming a problem, and I'm hoping I'm there is actually something I can do, short of buying a new computer, to make it better.

I'll be editing a video - even using "Draft" in the playback monitor window, and things will be fine for about 5 minutes. Then suddenly the playback picture will start glitching - flashing back and forth between two frames, and eventually it will just freeze. Nothing else freezes, mind you. I can still play the media, hear the audio, add/remove tracks, etc. It's just the display, which is pretty much vital for producing a video:-P.

My system specs are: Intel Core i3 530 @2.93 GHz, 8 GB of RAM and a 64-bit Windows 7 operating system.

Is there anything I can do - some setting to tweak? Or am I stuck getting a new system or more RAM?

Thanks!

Ken

A Core i3 is woefully inadequate for editing video. Even Intel suggests that it's designed for surfing the Internet, word processing, and doing email, and not much more.

A Core i5 is the minimum you should use for editing video with a Core i7 being highly recommended.

It is odd that it works for 5 minutes before it starts to glitch. I wonder if it could be overheating because your CPU can't take the strain? There are no tweaks that you can do to make an inadequate CPU adequate. Check the temps to make sure it's not overheating.

Jr may be right about your system, but I still edit AVCHD from my Canon camera on a 3Gig Core 2 duo, so I don't think your freezing is a problem of the CPU alone. It sounds like you have some scheduled event running that is causing too much work on your graphics card or CPU.

When it happens, check to see what processes are running.

OK, thanks guys. I was afraid of that. And Donald, I've done that and closed things down. But there doesn't seem to be a huge percentage of CPU being taken up by Vegas or anything else.

Thanks again.

That's odd. Maybe it's not your CPU then. That doesn't take away from the fact that a Core i3 is underpowered but it might not be the issue this time.

If everything else fails, try disabling the GPU completely - if you haven't already tried.(Options/preferences/Video/GPU acceleration).

It usually helps. Sad, but true - even with the latest 453 build GPU acceleration causes too many problems...

I'll try that, and let you know. Thanks!

I just went ahead and replaced my motherboard with a new one and an i5 processor. And I'm happy to report that it did the trick!

Thanks for the pointing me in the right direction! It is already a pleasure editing video without having to worry about the stupid glitching.

Cheers!
