Playback issue-video or sound will stop

When I'm reviewing the movie on playback screen, it will stop playing the video after 5 or 10 minutes into the movie, but the sound will continue or vise versa will occur. I can stop the playback and start it again and both will come back. Then further into the playback it will show all red boxes in the timeline where I inserted pictures, which were there previously when I scubbed throught the timeline, the sound will continue as normal while playback but a black screen only appears.

I'm wondering if this is a memory issue? I running windows XP, dual core processor and 2 gigs of ram, this should be enough. I don't have any other programs running other than Vegas, unless they're running in the background hidden.

I'm also running into a problem if I try to render the whole movie, which is 60 minutes long. It seems to render alright if I break it up into 15 minute increments?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Everyone here has been a great help in the past, thank you again.

Hm, seems more like a harddisk issue. (Your system spec are rather good).
Keep in mind that if your disk is formatted in FAT32, then 4GB is the largest size a file can have. Change it to NTFS to allow bigger file size. (warning: reformatting deletes all contents).
You need to post more information. What are you rendering to? Mpeg2? Are you working in hd? What file type are you importing into Vegas?
Hint: most Vegas users use two fysical drives for source video and rendered video (even a usb-stick will do).

Hi Ivan,

I'm rendering to Mpeg2. Should I try rendereing to another format? I want the end result to be on a dvd. Not working in HD. The import files are AVI. I have Vegas on the C drive and my video files on the D drive.

What could be hanging up the playback?

Ivan,
Just FYI it's a Sony Vaio computer. But I'm not sure if the hard drive is formatted in FAT32 or the other, machine is only 2 y.o.
Thanks,

(My machine is a very low spec acer portable with only 512Mb ram. It works fine with Vegas, although render times are long. Your machine has much better specs so it should run Vegas without issues.
Make sure source files and target location are not on the same fysical drive.
Go to 'My computer' and select the target disk, right click on it an select properties to find out if you're NTSF formatted.)

But more importantly, I read your original post again, and as far as I understand, you're talking about playback in the preview window, right? Hm, now I remember I had an issue also with failing playback. I solved it by increasing the sound buffer under preferences. Click Options/Preferences/ tab Audio Device. Increase 'playback buffering (seconds)' in small steps until the problems go away. (mine is at 0.54).
Good luck.

ps
mpeg2 for dvd is perfect
