Playback problem

A VERY newby question as I'm testing out the trial software - please forgive ignorance.
I have been very impressed by the audio side of Vegas so far, but when it comes to the video aspect, although the interface appears quite intuitive, I am not able to play back any video with any amount of smoothness. It is very jerky and only after a number of replays does it smooth out (no effects added). The more action within the frame - the longer it takes to smooth out. Obviously I am doing something wrong...or have some settings wrong. No-one would be able to use this as an edit platform as it is. I am running a dual 1G system with 512 ram. It is the same system I use to run my DPS Velocity.
If I decide to go the Vegas route I will be operating it on a lattop.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bruce

You'll find loads in this forum on that topic if you search for "playback stutter". To start with, it's best to have the program and media files on different physical disks. If you want to go into other things, check out these tweaks for non-linear editing: http://www.videoguys.com/WinXP2.html

Is your video uncompressed or is it DV?

It's DV.

Thanks.
I'll try putting the files on another drive and I'll also do a search as you suggested.
Cheers,
