Playback Rate

Hi All,

Trying to edit some holiday footage, its in MPEG-2 format. The problem I am having is that I am trying to sync it to some music (in mp3 format) like a music video. I therefore require precise control over where the audio and video sync.

However, when playing back through the preview window the playback rate of the video drops from 25 frames to like 19 frames, this throws out the sync. However if I render it and then view it externally it syncs fine.

Is there anyway of getting the preview to work correctly?

UPDATE: Just tried it with a DV AVI file, no problems there, the playback rate works fine and syncing is great. So.. the only problem is that DV AVI files take up around 12 GB of hard disk space for each hour. is there a better format to edit with? I am looking to be editing with around 8 hours worth of video (2.5 years travelling, u get a fair bit of video).

The speed of the MPEG2 playback shouldn't be slowing down at all. 19 fps means that you are only seeing 19 of the 25 frames. However, every second that goes by real time should also have the file advance exactly 1 second as well. The frame rate drop means that your PC can't keep up showing all the frames, so it skips over frames it can't show while retaining overall sync.

DV avi really is the best format to use with this software. If you don't have 100GB of drivespace ... well, you should go get it! ;) Your other option is to work on smaller sections at one time rather than trying to have the entire 8 hours' worth on your drive.
