Playback stutter on large file

Ok, I got a call from a friend who is using Vegas for making
videos of his kindergarten class. His problem is that
when he renders to an uncompressed .avi file of about 5.3 GB, he can't
get it to playback in any of his other software without excessive stuttering.

He's using Windows 2000 so I don't think the 4 GB limit has anything to
do with it unless other software programs have a limit too.
I know that Sound Forge 6 advertises overcoming the 4 GB limit.
The FAT 32 file system has the limit but I haven't heard about
it being a software limit. Any ideas on that?

I'm sorry the information is so sketchy. He's strictly an amateur
and doesn't even know which video card or sound card he has or
which options he has checked in Vegas.
All I can say about his system is that it's
Win 2000
Pentium 3 866 MHz
768 RAM

He's not using too many effects and says that playback in Vegas while
editing is fine.

I'm going over there later to check it out, but I'm more of an audio guy
and was hoping I might be able to get at least a few basic ideas from those
of you who know more about video.

I'll post more information later.

Thanks in advance.

Dave

I hope he's rendering to DV .avi instead of to uncompressed.

Even still, a DV file is pretty hefty, over 30Mbps, so not many players can handle it. Vegas has a playback engine optimized for DV, but MediaPlayer is designed more for compressed media like WMV and MPEG. You can improve MediaPlayer's performance by going to Tools, Options, Performance and setting Hardware Acceleration to Full and Digital Video to Large.

Generally DV files aren't used for playback on computer screens. If the intention is to show this video on a computer then rendering it to WMV or MPEG will give much smoother results.

Wow! That was fast. Thanks.

I thought it might be something like that but just wasn't sure
since I don't know much about video.

Thanks again.
