Playing video in DVD player?

Is it possible to render a video in a format (other than VCD) that will play on a standard DVD Player, assuming the DVD player can read CD-R disks? I can create a vcd disk at 320x240 that the DVD player can display, but the quality sucks. Can I create essentially a high-quality vcd at 720x480?

Go to www.vcdhelp.com. They have numerous articles on various VCD/SVCD/DVD-related issues as well as comparisons of hardware, software and video formats. You can also find a plethora of links to freeware utilities for conversion, encoding etc.

In one comparison, they list many available DVD players that have the capability to deal with one or more of the following:

CD-R, CD-RW, VCD, SVCD, XVCD, SXVCD, DVD-R, MP3, MINIDVD/CDVD, etc.
