Please clarify media storage for me...

I will ask my question by using a scenario (pls be patient with me).

Let's say I create a Project called Movie1. Now I capture video from my HD camera and I see Clip 1, Clip 2 and Clip 3 in Project Media. So I add these clips to my timeline, edit, save and render as Render.MP4. All is good.

Now I open my Movie1 project and I delete everything from the timeline and I capture Clip 5 and Clip 6 and I add them to the timeline and edit. Now I save my project as Movie2.

Almost there-

So while I am in my Movie2 project I see ALL of my clips- Clips 1-6...

My questions are:

A) How many copies of the clips are on my machine? Is there one of each with pointers to them in more than on project? Or are there multiple copies of the clips being stored in different projects?

B) What happens if I open my Movie2 project and delete Clips 1-3? Will this remove them from my machine? Or would it only remove a pointer? Or would it only remove the duplicate copy of them?

I recognize that there is redundancy in my questions but I need to beyond a shadow of a doubt understand how this works...

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!

Newbie Geo

How many copies of the clips are on my machine? - One.

Is there one of each with pointers to them in more than on project? - Yes. As far as I know, when you "add" a clip (Vegas calls them events) to a project, the Vegas .veg file just points to an address where that event resides in your system. The event is NEVER really edited or changed in any way. This is called Non-destructive editing. You can cut, trim, copy, paste, blur, color correct, composite etc. etc. to your hearts content without ever changing the original file. A .veg file is actually just a series of pointers (that's a simplification) and instructions to render the file. As I said, that's a simple explanation of a complex process. Others may chime in with detailed explanations.

What happens if I open my Movie2 project and delete Clips 1-3? Will this remove them from my machine? - Nop. There is an option in Vegas to delete the event from your harddrive. You have to select that to do an actual deletion.

Welcome. What version of Vegas are you running?

The Project Media window is a sophisticated set of shortcuts, nothing more.

Icons in the Project Media neither copy, delete, nor rename the clips unless you tell them to do so. Changes you make in the Project Media window affect the Project, not your files.

Likewise, removing an icon from the Project Media does not affect the original clip in any way, shape, or form, UNLESS you click [b]"Remove from Project and delete File(s)."

Pretty straightforward, actually. By the way, this topic and hundreds of others are covered in great depth in your Vegas Help section.

A) As you suspected, the entries in Project Media are just Pointers to what's on your Hard Drive. Project media is just a list of what you are using in that project, or which you have "imported" - in your case they were there from your first project and when you Saved As Movie 2, they would stay there unless you delete them (or click the lightning icon, which removes all unused media references from Project Media. But, to repeat, deleting them from Project Media does not delet them from your hard drive .... UNLESS you right click and choose "Remove from Project AND Delete files."

B) I think I've already answered that in A) - it would only remove a pointer to them.

Your approach is almost exactly the same as I do, with one additional valuable "tweak".

You will see a lightening bolt icon on the Project Media Pane's Toolbar. When I hit this it will remove the shortcuts to the underlying media that is NOT presently being used OR have become redundant up there on the Timeline - you say you add new media and not use older work? The value with this is that I am no longer looking at say 100>500 clips, that have propagated in number as I have developed a Project, but ONLY the ones that are being edited.

This is a great way for this messy editor to get "cleaned-up". It also keeps the Veg file size down and makes for a more efficient running project altogether. This does NOT delete the Media that is stored on the drives.

I'm using Studio Platinum 9...

You guys are the greatest. thx for answering and thx for doing it in a welcoming way! For what it is worth- I did try using Vegas Help and what I found was a bit ambiguous. I had a feeling it was pointers but needed to be absolutely certain!

really appreciate it!

Here is the link to the proper forum for your version of Vegas:

Posting your question in the Pro forum can get you some ambiguous advice because it is a different version of the software. Good Luck!
