Vegas' VidCap program doesn't really support anything other than DV over firewire connections. Use Pinnacle to capture the video, then edit in Vegas.

You might also want to consider upgrading to ... well, almost anything except the Dazzle unit. Generally USB video capture devices aren't worth the plastic the cases are molded from.

I had a firewire Dazzle which worked fine with Vegas, but as Kelly said, the picture quality was simply atrocious. I did a pretty big project with it and I've always regretted using it.

But if you're capturing from camcorder via firewire, why not just connect the cable into the firewire port on the PC and capture using Vegas VidCap.

Vegas does not and will not work with USB capture devices. Furthermore, it won't work with video that was capture via USB in another program.

So, you'll need to capture the video by Firewire if you want to edit it in Vegas.

As was stated, Vegas will not capture from the Pinnacle device.

Capture using Pinnacle, and then use the IMPORT MEDIA in the media bin of Vegas. Browse to where your captured video is located and import it into Vegas.

This is correct.

Furthermore, it won't work with video that was capture via USB in another program.

But this is incorrect. Vegas has been able to work with USB captured video from at least some devices since some time around v 7 <something>. I used to have a Panasonic DV camcorder, the 400, with a bum firewire port. I used Windows Media Player to capture through the USB port (the Panas support full DV capture over the USB port) and edit the result in Vegas. I can't recall exactly when it changed, it didn't work for a little while, but it did change.

Vegas really doesn't care how or where the video was captured: USB, Firewire, SCSI, file copy, etc. You should be able to take the video tile and simply drop it on the timeline. I would recommend that you simply continue to capture the video using Pinnacle. However, when you specify the file format that will be used to save the capture, experiment until you find one that works with Vegas. I'm sure one of them will. If you can't get the captured video to appear in Vegas, post about 5 seconds of this video on some ftp site, and I'm sure we can figure out what else you have to do in order to get it to play in Vegas. This usually involves downloading and installing some codec. Not hard to do.

Here's a link to the Pinnacle page which describes this device:

Dazzle DVC 170 USB video capture device

This page says that it can export in a wide range of different formats. What format are you using to save your captured video? I would first make sure that you are setting it to send the highest possible resolution, at least 640x480 or, better yet, 720x480. If it can do the latter, the spec sheet says that it can save in DV format. That would certainly be my recommendation, and I would almost guarantee that Vegas will be able to read that file.
