PLEASE HELP - ERROR MESSAGE

Jay Gladwell wrote on 1/27/2009, 6:09 AM

I installed a new DVD/CD burner (fixed previous problem). Now, when trying to extract a track from a CD, I get the following error message:

"The drive has been reset, most likely by another application or due to a SCSI/IDE configuration problem."

And the "details" read as follows:

'SFMMCX'-(17)

-'PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-116D 1.09'-(0)
Module c:\p4\sonic3\release\vegas\8.0\cddrvs\sfcd\comread.cpp Line 2736
The drive state has changed.
A power-on reset or bus-reset has occurred.

Can anyone tell me how to resolve this problem?

TIA!

G'day Jay. This is just a shot in the dark, I wonder if the drive is dropping power, I'd check the power connection (maybe the cable as well). Might even try unplug-plugin the power connector.

Nope, that didn't help, dog-gone-it.

It's not on the same bus as any other drives is it? Did it just replace a previous drive? This kind of thing will drive a guy nuts!

Also a shot in the dark Jay, but is the master/slave jumper setting the same as the drive it replaced?

Doesn't appear to be.

Did it just replace a previous drive?

Yes, that's correct.

This kind of thing will drive a guy nuts!

That's no drive, it's just a short putt!

Yes, it is. I've even tried various placements--no good.

EDIT:

I had to replace the motherboard, but all else is the same.

Hey Jay,

Few suggestions:

First , try ruling out conflicts by disabling all non-essential services and applications (more info here - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310560). In general terms to disable everything under Services and Startup in MSCONFIG, go to Start > Run, then type MSCONFIG. Click the Services tab, checkmark Hide All Microsoft Services. Now click Disable All and Apply. Now click the Startup tab and click Disable All. Click Apply and Close. Choose to restart the computer.

If that fails, you might also want to try a simple uninstall / reinstall of the offending applicaiton. Adding new hardware changes the computer ID assigned to your system by SCS software which is used for registration and activation purposes. If computer ID changes, then the software may be confused about its setup. Uninstall / Reinstall may help.

A method that might get you through the problem short term is to use a different app (like WMP) to rip the songs and later import into Vegas.

Hope that helps. MK.

Sorry, Dave, that didn't help.

MSK, I tried disabling services and applications, that didn't help. That's why this is driving (has already driven) me nuts!

I'll try the re-install as a last resort.

Are you curretnly running or have you ever installed anything from Nero?
Simply disabling the services installed by Nero is not enough to actually stop them from tripping you up.

Bob.

One thing to try, if you haven't done this yet, is to uninstall the drive from Device Manager, re-boot, and let Windows discover and re-install the driver. I have had this fix problems like this.

Jay Gladwell wrote on 1/29/2009, 3:15 PM

Bob, not running Nero, or anything like unto it.

John, I tried that. It didn't have any effect.

Later this evening, I'm going to uninstall and reinstall Vegas. See if that helps.

I don't think anyone has mentioned what has plagued me a number of times: the new drive may be a dud. Take it back and see if a new drive behaves properly. If not, you can go back to being frustrated. :-\

The drive behaves perfectly well in every other situation--plays and burns both CDs and DVDs.

Well, now I'm at a total loss.

I tried a clean install, according to Sony's instructions, and that did not fix the problem. I don't know what to do at this point. it seems so trival, yet so frustrating.

Thanks to all for your help and suggestions.

Should you have any other suggestions, by means share them!

Is it IDE? Master/Slave setting incorrect?
Jay Gladwell wrote on 1/30/2009, 9:15 AM

John, it is IDE and the jumper is set to slave. Actually, I tried each of the settings available (one by one) and one of them solved the problem.
