Please Help... Topic: Analog Video Output

I just finished reading the forum thread on this topic posted about a week ago, but I'm still feeling slightly confused.

Here's my situation.

I've recently purchased a compaq 7100US with a built in 1394 ieee capture card. The computer also came with an Nvidia g-force 64M graphic accelerator card that has a s-vhs tv-out connection.

I also have a philips s-vhs vcr.

My rookie question is this:

Am I somehow able to output a rendered avi file through the s-vhs out connection on my g-force card, directly in to my s-vhs vcr?

If so, how? When I access the hardware information regarding my g-force card, there is no dialogue box allowing me to select or enable that port.

If I am not able to output video through there, then what is that output connector for and how can I use it?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I haven't used the Nvidia card, but i've used the Matrox & ATI cards that support video out. From my experience with them, i'll guess you may be coming across a resolution problem. The Matrox & ATI cards only support the video out feature at resolutions of 800x600 or 640x480. If the card is set to a higher resolution, the video out is disabled.

Since video editing software tends to have lots of "stuff" on the screen, most people using it will set their video resolution higher, often 1280x1024 or more. I'm assuming this is the case for you too. Try reducing your resolution to 800x600, then check to see if you can enable the video out.

Your video out connections on your G-force card are probably useless without additional drivers. My S3 Virge video card has similar connections, but it's mainly for use with a dvd software player, according to tech support for my machine. (Monorail PIII 450 from Best Buy) No drivers for either the dvd player or the S3 video out were included with my machine, and I didn't feel like paying $50 more to get them. I suggest you contact tech support for your machine or G-force to get the lowdown.

I have the same Compaq and Geforce setup. You won't be able to use it's S-Video output to play out completed projects. But the good news is that you can use it for an awesome preview window. Before you can get it to run in "twin view" mode, you'll need to have an S-Video cable hooked up from the Geforce output to you SVHS deck. Now you can go to windows properties (right click on the Windows screen) and get it going.
Under Advanced, you should find a twin view tab.
Email me and we will work thru it.
I run my S output window at 640x480 16bit. This lets you see all of the action and title safe areas of you 720x480 DV signal.
