Grazie:

Thanks for all the sage advice. I have learned a tremendous amount and once I get the PC Card adaptor and reconfigure data flow I'll let you know how it all turns out!

You definately get the gold star!!

Cheers,

I'm revisiting this issue because after several months of trouble free operation, I was once again treated to the following error message:

"An error occurred during playback. Unable to mix audio. The operation timed out".

I had successfully captured and edited multiple capture clips, and experienced no problems. I then rendered and printed my project to tape. After viewing the tape, I decided that I really didn't like a couple of things I had done, and I reopened the project to make some modifications.

All of a sudden, I couldn't preview for more than twenty seconds without seeing the system hang, and then display the infamous error message. I was astonished. I couldn't imagine what had changed. I tried re-booting, I tried closing off every little thing I could find, I tried defragging; nothing helped.

Finally, out of frustration, I simply erased my rendered .AVI file (which I didn't like anyway), and dicovered, much to my amazement, that the problem was gone.

Can anyone out there think of a reason why the presence of a finished movie would prevent SF from correctly working with the original source material?

Are you short of disk space somewhere?

No...., the drive I use for capture and work in progress is still 2/3 empty. (24 GIG used out of 80.)

kcarroll (and others),

I am a new VideoFactory 2.0 user. Last night I had my first editing session. And unfortunatly, within minutes I hit the error described in this email thread. Many times. Eventually the application crashed. After that it seemed a bit better; I got the error but less frequently, and didn't have a second crash.

My configuration:
Dell Latitude C600, 256MB Memory, 750 Mhz, Windows 2000
2 Cardbus Firewire cards: A NEC based one I use for connection to camcorder, and a TI based one I use for connection to Maxtor DV3000 80GB (7200) Firewire drive
Windows 2000

I have also reported this to SF customer support (via email).

Firstly, I captured video without any problem (to my Maxtor drive).

While editing (playing in the preview window a previously captured DV file) I repeatedly have the system freeze up, then get the error

"An error occurred while starting playback. Unable to mix audio. The operation timed out".

I had not done anything special with the audio track - all I was doing was viewing the video, and using the split function to trim the video on the timeline.

I did a search in this forum for the keywords in this error and found this thread.

Now, from reading the thread, what I seem to have in common with kcarroll is we are both using a laptop and an external (Maxtor) drive. I've read through the suggestions. I don't believe I have a bad audio track; I don't have any other applications running trying to use the soundcard. I did configure VF to have my project files on the same external drive as the capture files; someone suggested it would be better to store the project files on the C: drive, I can try this. kcarroll, did this help you?

I previously used the hated Video Wave 4.0, but never had any problems like this with it. In fact, it worked pretty well - I was just looking for something which I thought would be better. But it looks like a minefield for users of external firewire drives.

I got this from the SF Technical Support team, it looks like Videofactory has issues with firewire drives.

As this is what I use, it is a shame I wasn't aware of this before I wasted my money purchasing Videofactory.

Hi Mark,

Unfortunately this is an issue with our software and firewire drives, which
we have been trying to resolve for some time now, and the only work around
that I am aware of is to copy the source material to your internal drive.
The sample rate is most likely not the issue.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

****FOR CLARITY, PLEASE ATTACH THIS TO ANY RESPONSE****
