Please Insert Disc?? WTH?!?!

Ahhhk wrote on 12/24/2000, 12:24 AM
Im trying to install Vegas Video from the brand new just
purchased CD. And after running setup, it keeps telling me
to "Please Insert Disc:" while the CD is in the drive.
If I click OK it takes a min then asks again.

Ummm...WTH?

The CDRom drive is new and works perfectly with every other
CD I have. The VV CD is clean w/o a single
scratch/smudge/etc - since I just took it out of the sleeve.

Can someone please explain this to me...?

Thanx.

The repeated "Please Insert Disc" message is almost always the
direct result of the drive not reading the disk properly.
There could be a number of causes, including a faulty CD.

What operating system? Win2K is known to do this on some
machines. You may want to apply the service pack if you are
running Win2K. Hitting "F5" in Explorer will sometimes clear this up
momentarily. I've also seen some drives prone to this behavior
depending upon their master/slave relationship on the IDE bus ... you
may want to experiment with that if all else fails.

Are you running any CD software like DirectCD? Programs
like this, loaded in memory, can sometimes cause this
behavior. If so, you might want to Task Manager or CTRL-ALT-DEL and
remove any of these programs from memory to see if the problem
clears up

Does rebooting solve the problem? If not, I would
definitely suspect the drive itself. Some of the cheaper
high speed drives may not read properly at their rated
speed.

If the drive works perfectly otherwise and does not exhibit the
behavior with any other CD, if may well be a faulty CD. However, if
you suspect the disk itself, you might want to try it on another
machine before attempting to return it.

FWIW ...

Thanks for the responce. I tried the CD on another puter
and it did the same thing. The first comp has a brand new
Kenwood CD and Yamaha CDR. It was doing it with both
drives - both that have never had any probs reading/burning
any other CD. I even tested both CD drives with EZ-CD's
testing function.

So, strangely enough, I copied the VV dir from the CD to a
HD...installed from there...and it worked fine. If it had
given me a read error, I would have tried this in the first
place. But, it seemed more like a copy-protection scheme of
some kind.

Copys from the CD, but wont install from it.....odd.

And, not that it matters anymore, but Im running 98SE, and
no direct-cd, viris, or any other TSRs (except TaskMon,
SysTray, and my CPU monitor)

Thanks again!

It may also be result of having DISABLED "auto-insert notification" on your CDRom drive...

Well, first of all, thanks for all the kewl stuff this
morning! But, I still want to know how you got in my house
though, w/o setting off the alarm.

Anyway, I know you're probably a lil frost-bitten and all,
so I wont try to understand your reasoning for thinking
that having AIN disabled would cause a CD not to install.
I may be "old-skool", but I dont see the connection.

Besides, my regular CD drive still has it enabled - I even
ran the install from the install menu that popped up :)

Dear Kevin:

If you had stopped drinking your eggnogg, you would have noticed I NEVER wrote that disabling AIN
would prevent you from performing an install. I wrote that when AIN is disabled, the drive won't
AUTOMATICALLY read the CD you put in it. In cases of multiple CD's installs (like the recently
released Reason - CHECK IT OUT!) you can run into a bit of truble because of it.

As far as NOT UNDERSTANDING my reasoning for this, I DO understand your resons for not
understanding my reasoning!

Anyway, the gifts are not really from me, but what the hell, I'll just take the credit!

happy new year to you, David "The Jackal" Ruby, Chinese Boy and the Twin Kicks

christmasly yours,
