SteadyHand from Dynapel makes a great plug-in for Premiere, and also as stand-alone software. This being a VV3 forum, I'm not sure about a plug-in for it.

There are several mentions in other postings about DynaPel's SteadyHand. It has several limitations, so make sure you understand them before you get your hopes up. I have been trying to drum up interest on this forum to either get SF to put it in VV or for forum members to go to:

www.dynapel.com

and ask that a plug in be tailored by DynaPel for VV.

The principle limitation of SteadyHand is that it can do strange things if there is movement WITHIN the picture, rather than camera movement. Telephone poles entering the scene while shooting from a moving car, a person rocking in a rocking chair, make for particularly strange effects.

Steadyhand works very well, but I find that it works even better if you DON'T have it correct for zoom errors (it can correct for vertical, horizontal, rotational, and zoom shakiness). I also turn off rotational correction for most scenes. The only major problems I've had with it is that it sometimes jumps during the last 1/2 second of a scene. I've corrected lots of pretty bad shots. For footage that is reasonably steady, you can make it look like it was shot on a tripod -- it's that good.

SteadyHand can only do so much. It's a smartly designed application, but of course it has limitations. Awhile back, I shot a wedding from a balcony, because the coordinator demaned all cameras upstairs. So I was up there and zoomed in to the bride and groom. The balcony floor must not have been concrete, because the photographer moving around caused my camera to shake ever so slightly. But since I was zoomed in so much, it just made that small movement exaggerated, right during the vows too. Well SteadyHand did a swell job of making it look as close to normal as I could want. But a plug-in for VV3 would be nice.

Can you select only parts of your video that you would like to apply this effect or do you have to do it to the whole thing.

Steadyhand is totally brain-dead as far as selecting portions of video. It works only on the entire AVI file. If you want to only modify part of a larger video, you must first render just a portion of your big AVI file into a small AVI file (VirtualDub does this really fast, using Direct Stream mode, by simply copying the selected portion).

The other major problem with Steadyhand is that it doesn't have any batch capabilities. As a result, if you create ten small AVI files that represent the scenes you want to correct, you must load each one individually, wait for Steadyhand to finish (it is not fast), and then load the next scene.

For the price, it's a good program. Commotion will do the same thing, but cost's alot more.

Thanks

I have been beta testing for DynaPel for over a year, and they just want to hear from you guys since it is very expensive to make a plug-in for a market that is not there. Premier people asked, and they got it.

The current product is scheduled to updating, to include batch processing and quite a few other changes. They are just waiting, and they take customer suggestions quite seriously. Drop them a line:
