plugin to give videos a "film" look?

ATP wrote on 7/27/2011, 11:11 AM
this is probably a newbie question, but please bear with me.

for a project i have received a bunch of recorded AVCHD material from various sources, mostly from point-and-click cameras that happen to have full-hd video capacity. so the movies are amateur and filmed as such, but more importantly, they very much have a "video" look.

is there a way in Vegas to give these movies a cinematic look, or looking as if it was a proper film? i understand garbage in = garbage out, and much of this is probably also determined by lighting etc. but anything that can approximate the idea of a film look would be a great improvement over the current "feel" of these videos.

most vids are recorded at either 50fps or 30fps PAL, and they have a 1920x1080 resolution. does anyone know what kind of plugins there are for this particular purpose (if any)?

thanks!

I use NewBlueFX's "Film Effects" for that purpose.

I maybe totally wrong here.. but I have found Vegas' own "soft contrast", if you take the vignette off and tweak it to add a nice film like effect... but I really know nothing about anything.. so disregard this comment. :D

If you think about 2/3-strip color in film and apply it to digital media and an NLE you could

place your media and copy that to a top track = 2 tracks, desaturate top track = black and white and composite as an overlay it will give you a boost black film look and add
detail back into the media

You have to add a color curve to the media and flatten the ramp keep the white high till you get the feel you want

Cost you nothing if you are desperate.
left with a plain track overlay, you can do this same in AE.

Reelpaks from VASST use professionally built plug-in chains that can be completely adjusted as you see fit after applied. They can apply through Ultimate S Pro/Lite, and Production Assistant, and Celluloid (Free).

Are you seeing the changes in the time line Dave?

I had never even looked at Vegas' "soft contrast" plug in. It's great - especially when combined with Vegas' "film effects." Thanks for the tip.

Why all the desire for film looks?

I don't see any need for it.

Why all the desire for film looks?

I want to reproduce the style of a 1930s movie with accompanying age scratches, gate jitter, etc. I had just been using Vegas' "Film Effects" for this, but the suggestion to add Vegas' "soft contrast" enhances what I'm going for.

That's why, at least for me.

Gees, and I used to spend hours fixing the projector gates to make the picture rock steady.

Me too. Not to mention making sure the arc was healthy. Wow am I old. (Now, where'd I put my splicing block?)

Derm, are you asking me if I'm seeing the changes of the FX on the media in the T/L or only on the preview window? Vegas doesn't show changes to media on the Timline clips, it only shows it on the preview windows. and those are updating correctly yes.

Hi Dave,
I phrased that badly I should have said in the preview window.
I havent used these VAAST film look FX much as i was not seeing in realtime how the effect would look in the preview window. I was only seeing a single frame in the VAAST window.Reading your post made me realise i was doing something wrong. I had the "Use Timeline Preview" box checked and this was preventing me from seeing the changes in real time in the preview window. I plan to use them a lot more know : )

Reber, as mentioned above New Blue Film Pro is very good for the kind of FX you want . I use it all the time, demo available.
