Poor playback performance

I am experiencing lagging and choppy previews at any quality setting using VMS HD Platinum 10. I am using avi files that I transcoded from my Kodak Playsport camera using the Matrox MPEG-2 I-Frame HD codec, following the instructions I found in the forums and at http://buildyourown.wordpress.com/2010/08/08/how-to-transcode-mov-files-using-matrox-codecs/.
I have read the recent thread on this camera and feel like I have exhausted the instructions I have been able to find, but I still have files that are not editor-friendly. I appreciate any help.

Have you set your project properties to "Match Media Settings"?
The Knowledgebase will tell you how to do this.

Never tried the Matrox codec itself, but my guess is that it should be able to preview smoothly.

I was experiencing the same issues when playing back my vids shot from a Canon T2i DSLR. I was all over the internet looking for solutions. Tried setting up projects every possible way with the same result. Tried every shooting format available in camera. Tried every preview setting. No better.
I finally found a 90% solution by running my .mov shots through Cineform NeoScene. They have a free 15 day trial you can try. There is also some info on the cameras that have related issues that neoscene is designed to fix. But this converts to .avi and it sounds like you're already there. Since the trial is free and the sofware, if it works, is $129. It's definitely worth checking into. http://www.cineform.com/neoscene/
I think part of my problems are due to insufficient hardware, (a little dated), however I've wondered if VMS platinum was available in 64 bit my problems would be solved as I would then get the full processing power of my dual core processors. Good luck. Anxious to hear if NeoScene helps you also.

I should add that, when converting in Neoscene, I didn't get the results I needed until I went into preferences and chose "de-interlace"

As i wrote many times here, Cineform is faster to both encode and decode than either DNxHD or Matrox AVI, the free intermediate codecs. The free ones are fast enough on fast hardware, but visibly slower than Cineform on less fast PCs. So it all depends if someone has the money for Cineform or not. Or if his time has no value.

musicvid provided an important clue. i had failed to create a new project and was importing new media into a project that had been matched to the .mov files. I now have preview performance which, though not great, is acceptable.
Thanks to all.
