Poor preview playback with VSTs

... inserted as Assignable FX . Pops and crackles every few seconds. Zippy noise when (say) dragging track height. Have found on 2 PCs with different video cards and drivers, so presumably not that ....

Goes away when VST removed (VSTs can be from any supplier). Doesn't seem to do it with VSTs on Track FX.

Fortunately not there in Rendered file.

I'm assuming you mean in VP13(310); confirmed! There seems to be a serious bug here compared to previous versions (eg VP12) which did not suffer from this problem with same project / settings / circumstances. Happens here with just one stereo audio file in project + SCS-supplied VSTs. Not pretty! Bug report submitted #140513-000114

Are you guys using AMD as well?

The only thing that stopped the artifacts for me was to switch to a non-ASIO audio driver

Support have answered:

"Clicking into options > preference > audio device, and increasing playback buffering will usually resolve this issue."

which is, of course, useless, as it does not explain different behaviour of VP13 compared with previous versions with EXACT SAME SETTINGS.
They seem to be in denial that something has been broken.....
