Positioning Text

David-Wigfield wrote on 6/10/2021, 12:28 PM

I am wondering if there is a way to accurately position text using the arrow keys. I need to position a wingding arrow on the screen over CAD drawings for tutorial videos. If I use the mouse I have to expand my edit window as large as I can to get the arrow where I need it and then decrease the size of the window. Very annoying to have to keep re-sizing windows all the time. I can move it with the mouse in the Text Edit window but it is still not too precise. If I click within the box in the Text Edit window I can use the arrow keys but it moves in steps that are too large. I found if I hold down the CNTL key it moves in finer steps but the steps are still too large. Is the a way to use the arrow keys to move my text in really fine steps? I am using Movie Studio 17 Build 204 on a Windows 10 machine. Still using build 204 because I can't get the latest update to install. Thanks for any help!

Another option to have a more precise placing with use of the mouse, is to make the preview full screen:

Hi, using X-Y co-ordinates as mentioned in the other post is a bit clunky and time consuming. I tried setting up another window layout that has a larger preview monitor window but when I switch to it with the text edit window open Movie Studio closes the text edit window. In order to get the precision I would like, with this larger preview monitor window, I can't see the time line to reopen the text edit window. I run a second monitor when editing that has the preview on it but the second monitor does not show the handles or boxes when you edit text or an effect. Is there a way to get your external monitor to show them?

VEGASDerek wrote on 6/11/2021, 12:38 PM

You can detach the preview pane on VEGAS and drag it separately to the second monitor, then expand the detached window to a larger size to give you the ability to be more precise with the positioning.

David-Wigfield wrote on 6/11/2021, 1:26 PM

I totally forgot about detaching panes and moving them around. Only been using this program for about 7 years so I have no excuse. That worked perfectly! I set this detached mode up as another window layout.

Thanks to all of you!

Yes a second monitor makes this ofcourse much easier. The second monitor can be used for locating the preview for doing some precise positioning in there and also it still can be used for normal external preview.

I am dying to get a second monitor to dedicate as the preview monitor! Can anyone give me the two-sentance explanation how you set this up? First, I would need a new graphics-adapter. Most of the ones I'm considering have two display ports and two HDMI-ports. I would love to use them all! But how/where do you assign these outputs? In Windows' device manager?

My second monitor is an old LCD monitor with VGA and Digital connectors. I use an HDMI connection from my pc to the monitor with an adapter for the digital connection. At the pc end you just tell windows to use it - Settings/Display. Or right click on Desktop for Display Properties. No need for any additional hardware or software.

Sorry, it's more than two sentences but it is really 'one sentence' simple.

Thanks, Eric! Yes, I looked it up in the meantime and seems pretty straightforward.

My computer came with dual output on board graphics. I use a 27" HDMI monitor for my timelines etc and a 22" VGA for the preview and to keep file folders open. If you have to add a card to your computer make sure that your power supply can handle the extra wattage. I would like to add a third monitor to my setup but my HP Pavillion has a weird power supply connector which makes it really hard to find a higher wattage power supply for a more powerful graphics card. Good luck.

studio-4 wrote on 6/13/2021, 3:22 PM

I bought mine used and came with a low-end AMD card with only one output, so I am in the market for a new GPU now, preferably one with two display ports and two HDMI ports.

I was looking at GPUs all night last night and was careful to check the power-requirements. I have an HP Z440 entry-level server which came with one of two power supplies: 500W and 700W. So for the GeForce cards I've been looking at they recommended 500W or larger power supply so I should be okay.

I'm thinking of getting a EVGA Geforce 1650 Super 4GB or the 1660. The 1650 is widely available new on eBay—but at TWICE its original selling price. It's a $179 GPU selling for $399 and up. But I want an NVIDIA card since VEGASderek confirmed that the screen-capture tool in Vegas doesn't work with AMD GPUs. Also, while Vegas has some unique support for AMD GPU-acceleration, BorisFX only supports NVIDIA GPU's acceleration.
