You're taking your footage and rendering it to a mpeg-2. What's the reason for prerendering?
That is a long time though. Wow. What are you rendering from?
When you prerender you choose a fileformat & template to render to. Prerendering is meant to make it so editing & final rendering is faster. If the playback on the timeline is good then I wouldn't bother prerendering.
What could very well be faster in your case is to convert your video to an image sequence & use that on the TL. Should be a lot faster then a prerender & will render out in a final format reasonably fast.
Im prerendering because its taking too long to preview the video. Every time I skip to a part of the video it always freezes/frame skips or the preview screen turns black. I even set the preview quality to a quarter.

I would pre-render to a DV AVI. It will render much faster and be better quality for making decisions than an MPEG.
