Preferences Problem

I am using a separate external (G:) drive to keep all my Vegas workfiles on. I have tried many times to set up my Preferences so that all workfiles go onto that drive. I also set the project Preferences to folders in the G: Drive. My problem is that no matter how diligently I do this many Gigs of workfiles frequently end up on my C: Drive in the Documents & Settings/.../... folder, and I have not been able to find a way round this problem. I know this is the default set up by Vegas, but I am looking for a way to change that.

Is there any way I can set up my Preferences in Vegas to have all the file placement defaults permanently in a specified area of the G: Drive?

Are you meaning files you capture ? If so under capture/options/preferences/disk management, assign where you want the clips.

Have you changed the "Pre-rendered Files Folder" under File - Properties? Remember to check the "Start all new projects with these settings" box to make it permanent on all new projects.

I am having different problems now. I first of all set up a new folder G:\Captures, and this shows 72+Mb of free storage space. I went to Preferences and checked G:\Captures. Under the column heading "Free Space" I noticed that it shows nothing.
I then checked the "Start all new projects with these settings" Then I went to File\Capture Video and got the message "No capture files are available, or specified capture files are out of space".
I also noticed that under "Current selected device" it shows "No Capture Device". I have hunted around to find somewhere to select the capture device, but can't find it.

Please, where am I going wrong?

When you delete files, they get copied to a "recycle bin" and, therefore, continue to take space. If you have something like Norton installed, they may also have a recycle bin. Make sure ALL recycle bins have been emptied to get your space back.

I am not quite sure what is happening here. I had previously emptied the Recycle Bin, and it was still empty when I just checked. I could find no Norton Recycle Bin. One extra thing I did do was to go back to the Capture setup.

Previously when I setup the G:\Capture folder I deleted the C:\Documents and Settings\etc\etc\ path. That is when I got the "No capture folders available" etc., message. I have just gone back and set up a C:\Documents and Settings folder and I can capture clips into that folder OK. It shows that I have 29 minutes of space left. If I check the G:\Capture folder it shows I have over 5 hours of space left. So they are both giving indications I would expect knowing the space left on those drives.

But, whichever drive I select it shows "No Capture Device". Yet it will capture on the C Drive but not the G: Drive. I have looked around for somewhere to select the capture device, but have been unable to find it.

TIA for any help

How are you hooking everything up? Is the hard drive connected via firewire? Is the camera connected to the hard drive via firewire or to another firewire connection? When it works capturing to the C drive, is the external drive connected?
