Preview @ 25fps but playback at 15fps?

bgccdx wrote on 2/23/2003, 4:13 AM
Is there something wrong with my configuration? I can preview clips at full 25fps (PAL) and in the trimmer they also play at a solid 25fps, but when I put even one clip on the timeline it plays at a variable rate around 15 - 18 fps. I can understand that it would be slow if I have lots of effects, but why doesn't one clip play the same speed on the timeline as when it is in preview or the trimmer, given that it is the only clip on the timeline?

Do you have any track level effects or fades active? Check the level fader and make sure it's set at 100%.

YOu might also check your project properties to ensure the project matches the source footage.

Thanks. I have checked both of the suggested items and that doesn't help. I have no fades or in fact anything, I just start with a fresh project, take a sample file and put it onto the time line. The project properties appear to match the source footage.

Hi,

A recent thread discussed similar issues:

http://www.sonicfoundry.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=159502

Excerpt:

>>>>"Well guys, Dennis help me find the problem on my machine. I hope it’s the same on yours so this fix will work for you.

The problem was with the audio not video. I’m using a Creative SoundBlaster Live! Platinum 5.1 card but it may affect other cards as well. What I had to do was go into Options->Preferences->Audio Device (tab) and change my Playback buffering (seconds): from .35 to .40. That was it. As soon as I did that, the clips shot up to 29.97 fps. You may have to increase it more but I tested it all the way up to 1.00 and it didn’t get any better than .40.

I did notice that the fps display flickers a bit from 29.97 to 29.63 and back for a brief second while playing but this happens even when there are no events on the timeline. In Vegas 3 it just stayed solid unless it was passing over a transition. At any rate, I’ve got my playback back up to 29.97. Hope this helps one of you.

A big public THANK YOU to SonicDennis from me. SoFo has the best customer support bar none.

Thanks Mary. I read that thread and checked everything that it said, but I still get variable playback from the timeline. I guess I will just hve to keep looking and tweaking. Thanks for your input.
