Preview frame rate - Vegas 9

Chienworks wrote on 11/1/2009, 1:54 PM
Like a lot of folks i've seen my preview frame rates take a steep plummet when i upgraded to version 9. It's especially problematically when you switch back and forth between two instances. I've discovered an interesting and easy work around. I turn off the "Adjust size and quality" switch. When the frame rate gets bad, switch the preview to Draft / Quarter, and then immediate back to whatever you want it to be. It doesn't matter if playback is running or not when you do this.

Doing this alone can make my preview frame rate jump from 2fps up to the full 29.97fps. It works almost every time.

It seems that VP9.0c brings an improvement! From the release notes:

"Improvements to XDCAM (MXF), HDV, and AVCHD readers and writers"

My initial test showst that the slowdown of preview frame rate, playing from one clip to the next , is GONE!!! HURRAY!

Christian, I've noticed this too with AVCHD and the 32bit V9c, but not with the 64bit. Are you using 32bit or 64bit?

Hi,

So far I tested only with 32-bit VP9.0c , will test today with the 64-bit version, and report back!

Kelly,

Usually, in previous versions, when you switched the preview from Good/Full to Draft/Quarter vegas flushed its preview ram. You could see a clear effect on RAM and sometimes page file size if you watched task manager. I've wondered how 9c dealt with this with it's automatic preview quality feature.

Normally, if someone described the solution you described here I'd be thinking about the page file, but you're an old hand and already know that a really high preview RAM setting can slow preview down to a crawl because it forces more use of the page file. So that must not be it.

Is this only a problem with memory intensive media like AVCHD, or do you get the same problem with non-GOP media?

I'm still editing mostly DV. However, this trick seems to work wonders with anything i put on the timeline.

And yes, it's still exactly the same for me in 9.0c as it was in previous releases.

Hi,

I have now tried both (32 and 64 bit) versionsof 9.0c.

AVCHD playback and preview on the timeline is now working correctly, no hickups when going from one clip to the other. I tried this with a couple of projects, and all works now so good that it is again a pleasure to edit AVDHC straight on the timeline.

THANK YOU SCS for fixing this annoying "issue" !!!!

OK, I have Neo Scene, Gearshift and Upshift. Are you saying that raw AVCHD plays well enough in 9c so as to not require using these software programs anymore?
