Preview monitor FX icon, not what it seems!

Since day one I'd assumed that icon lets us add an FX to just the Preview Monitor such as say the Levels FX, in fact I seem to recall someone (Glenn?) suggesting this as a way to get correct preview in 32bit with HDV. As I just discovered that FX is not what it seems, it's a duplicate of the FX in the Video Buss track header i.e. it will affect the rendered out.
You'd perhaps never realise this unless you enabled Show Video Buss. Maybe I'm missing something but this seems a very dangerous "feature" that would (in my case has) lead a user astray.

you mean the "video output FX" button next to the "split screen view" button?

I've been using that since Vegas 3 to do things like add FX to the whole project, like a TV filter, etc. I think I've even warned people that if you use that & "render to new track" it will apply it to the new track.

I love that button. I hope it never changes. :D

Yes, that button.
Problem is it's a duplicate of another button which is where such a button should be, in the video buss master.
On the other hand the secondary display also has a number of image adjustments that only affect that monitor, it has no effect on rendered output.

I would avoid using it to get the levels correct for preview since that's dangerous, as you point out. Render to new track will screw things up.

For output, I'd nest the project into a new one (or render to a file, and then stick that file into a new veg and render from there). Again, to avoid accidents.

2- The secondary monitor approach is not bad; it isn't dangerous like Video Preview FX is.

"On the other hand the secondary display also has a number of image adjustments"

Where do you find these image adjustments? My external monitor does not look quite right.

I think I have it described here:
http://www.glennchan.info/articles/vegas/v8color/v8color.htm

Windows Secondary Display May use computer RGB or studio RGB levels. The setting is under Preferences -> Preview Device (tab) -> Color management (checkbox) -> Use Studio RGB (16 to 235). If the Use Studio RGB checkbox is active and checked, the windows secondary display will want to see studio RGB levels.

2- What kind of monitor is this? You might be able to calibrate it.

Glenn,
I have a pretty crappy secondary monitor (hoping what little profit we make on a current project can get us a real one). No calibration on it unfortunately.

I guess I was hoping (like Farss it seems) that Vegas had apply some of its magic to the montior!

thanks for the heads up on the RGB links,
matt

Hmm I was wondering if it was a computer monitor or a TV or a broadcast monitor.

You can calibrate the black and white level on any of those. After you figure out the levels, that's what I'd do.

Its a 17in Proview computer monitor (2003). It does have some basic adjustments on it that I've played with, but I can't seem to get it to match whats the Vegas preview on my laptop's screen.

I don't see anything wrong with using the icon / FX in the Preview window, so long as you're aware of what it's actually doing.
I've been using nesting quite a bit lately to effect complex render chains however it may not give WYSIWG during preview e.g. speed changes / ramps are a mess.
Oddly enough the processing chain to the internal and external monitor is not identical. It might not take too much work to implement an FX path into the monitoring chain that doesn't effect rendered output.

took me a few years to realize the video master bus was for more then just curve adjustments. :D Never noticed the FX button until Vegas 6!
