Preview Playback Frame Rate Vegas 20 Canon R3 & R5 HD Files...

Is this thread still up-to-date for Vegas 20 Pro? https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-make-my-video-preview-play-smoothly-in-vegas-pro--104624/

I just upgraded laptops to a Razer Blade 2022 with a 3080Ti and installed the latest studio drivers and latest version of Vegas as well as Windows updates (It's a clean install with no bloatware)- I will update my profile soon.
It has the 12th generation i7-12800H CPU
32GB of RAM
Windows 11
1920x1080 Screen

I've been changing settings based on the thread I referenced above, but I'm not seeing any real change in playback framerate. I'm getting about 3 or 4 frames per second. I'm also currently rendering Vegas proxy files (I've got about 3 hours or so left on those).

I'm using files from a Canon R3 and Canon R5 in HD at 29.97fps. I've matched the settings for the project to the R3 file. They are in C-LOG, 10 bit, and HEVC MP4 format (which I know is hard on Vegas). Here's the file information from the r3 and r5 respectively. Any help would be appreciated.

Is the Intel decoder set in preferences, file io? Is the legacy HEVC decoder disabled? That's about as good as Vegas will get at present and you may still need proxy files if it's not good enough.

nVidia is set in preferences given I have a 3080Ti and HEVC has been toggled on and off without any difference. Do you think bypassing the gpu and using strictly cpu would allow for a better framerate?

RogerS wrote on 12/10/2022, 10:44 PM

In file io it should be the Intel decoder, preferences/video NVIDIA.

You can try turning off the hardware decoder entirely in file io but still don't think it will play back well.

RogerS is telling you to do something as a starting point,

Make sure the Intel IGPU is set as GPU decoder in FILE IO, make sure "Enable Legacy HEVC decoder" is NOT ticked. How does it play with that setting?

Do you think bypassing the gpu (decoder) and using strictly cpu (for decoding) would allow for a better framerate?

Vegas HEVC decode is very broken, it depends on individual codec. Most 10bit HEVC only uses a single cpu core to decode HEVC, but other (fewer) 10bit codecs will use all your CPU cores. This is why even if playback is not very good at certain resolutions/frame rates, most likely it will be best decoding with 1 cpu core + GPU decoding compared to decoding with 1 CPU core alone.

Your Nvidia decoder doesn't decode 422 color video, only the Intel does

For some reason, intel isn't showing up. I've tried all three options available and I still only have a framerate of around 4-5fps on preview auto (after rendering sfpo proxy files using vegasaur. I see that Vegas doesn't recognize the spfo files made via vegasaur, but if I add them to the timeline they play back at a decent speed. I think I remember reading about this a while ago now).

You may need to turn it on in bios, or install the Intel drivers for it. Sometimes they only give you access to a single GPU decoder in laptops, probably for power management reasons, but hopefully not the case here.

RogerS wrote on 12/11/2022, 8:32 PM

If there's a MUX switch to bypass the iGPU turn it off. Consider contacting the manufacturer as the CPU does have an iGPU and it's your only hope of real-time decoding of 10-bit 4:2:2 HEVC.

I've reached out to Razer support as it's not an option in BIOS and I can't find a valid driver to install. The guy I chatted with is supposed to have a senior tech to get back with me. Vegas and Razer partnered earlier this year to showcase the way they compliment each other. So far, throwing Canon files into the mix, I'm not seeing the complimentary nature these two items should be showing.

Having said that, I can easily play these back in DaVinci Resolve Studio 18 straight out of the box.

j.razz wrote on 12/12/2022, 12:46 AM

I enabled the deprecated feature QuickTime plugin and under File I/O left everything unchecked. Upon relaunching Vegas, Intel now shows up in the options and my playback framerate is now up to full playback rate.

I just wanted to update here in case someone runs across this again (or for me when I upgrade this laptop again in two years :) ).

Hmm, baffling that Quicktime would have any impact on an Intel iGPU showing up, but well if it does your problem is solved!
