Preview quality- How to improve

When I tried to preview a 1 minute test clip, the preview quality switched from Best (full) to Best(half) then to Preview(half). I have tried to increase the Dynamic RAM Preview Max (MB) to 1,000 and 2,000 where the total available is 7,163 MB. It didn't seem to help. Is this the way it is or is there a way to improve the quality while still keeping a decent fps?

system info:
CPU: i7 860
RAM: 8 g, dual channel DDR3 1333
Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 5850
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

Using 9 or 5 second clips could be giving you false hope. It's quite likely all or a large part of the data is already cached into RAM.
As JR says, why are you stuck with using uncompressed?

I am convinced. I will do the editing using MXF or CineForm. I think my concern about the intermediates are unfounded.
