moviemaker2...

I can't find a setting in "preferences" that might be interfering. However, check to make sure you don't have a video effect causing the preview to be black and white. Look on your preview tool bar and click the video effect button (it would be green if an effect has been selected). If one is, then delete it. If video effects are not causing your problem then something else is selected and causing it.

I've seen this once before. Here's your answer:

You can turn OFF the button that looks like #

Or you can click the little drop down arrow beside the # button and change it back to the default setting of "Safe Areas".

Sounds like you applied a black&white effect (FX) to either the track or event. Are the thumbnails in timeline in color, just the preview is B&W?

Open that movie (project), in the track header on the left, click on the icon that looks like a vertical rectangle with circles on either side (Track FX), in the window that opens up, are there any FX listed? If not it will offer you to select one, press cancel. Next click on the same icon that is on your video "event" in the timeline at the trailing edge of it. Do you see one there?

May be even more likely to be on the master buss. The icon for that is located over the preview window.
