Print to DV Tape error

Mike M. wrote on 1/8/2004, 1:32 PM
Hello: Sorry, I know someone has addressed this already, but darn---I can't find the post.

When I try to print to DV tape using the "tools, print dv to tape" everything works (prerendering, file writing and machine control) except that during the recording process, I lose video (sceen on camcorder monitor goes blank) and audio for a couple of seconds while the machine continues to record.

Playing back the DV recorded piece sure enough shows the "gaps"

This happens at random locations of a 4 minute piece. I'm using a pre-striped/blacked new tape.

Any ideas on this?

Thanks.

You have something running in the background that is interrupting the output. Shut down all non-needed programs, maybe even disable any network connections.

Look for programs that are running in background and deactivate them. Other solution could be: disconect all usb or external devices since they are sometimes sending a clock signal every elapsed time. Don't forget to defragment your hard disk before you print to tape.
Good luck!

Thanks for the tips.

I'm running XP and looking at my running applications, that would only be Vegas. Processes are very small too---most system processes. CPU and Page File are at a minimum <40%. Defragmented and no difference. After about 15 times, I got it to lay down once. Weird for only a 4 minute file????

Can anyone suggest another way to playback either the timeline or a rendered file via 1394?

An alternate method would be to render to a separate AVI file and send that AVI file to tape using the capture program.

I'm having the same problem and I've got a 3 hour project to get out. I've tried everything
At first I thought it was the RAID array so I scubbed them and truned them into IDE. No luck.
I've closed everthing down and even statedwith fresh Windows with nothing else on it so it's not something running in the background. I have even networked my laptop and tried running Vegas from there to PTT and I get the same thing.
It's not RAID, not my DSR11, not the lead. It can't even be a driver or background task thing as Premiere outputs with no problem.
If I cut BIOS setting down to the Fail Safe setting it gets worse, skipping but still recording after 45 seconds. Otherwise it will run up to 20 minutes before starting.
GRRRRR.

Certain Firewired disk drives will cause this problem. Is there a Firewire disk drive attached to your computer? Even if you are not using video from that drive, merely having it attached will cause the problem. Note, this does not happen with all drives. My Maxtor One Touch works fine, but my Western Digital WD800 caused exactly the problem you describe until I sent it back to WD and they replaced it. The refurbished unit obviously had some sort of ECO applied that fixed the problem.
