Print to tape & black & white boxes?!

I'm still pretty new to all of this. I've rendered a portion of a video clip as NTSC DV .avi. However, when I try to write that clip to tape, I find that the DV device will start to record but that all it records is black and white boxes that flash on and off, sometimes going to a white screen. Eventually, the DV device just shuts off.

Sometimes, the tape will begin to write correctly before starting the whole checkerboard thing.

I've played with the numbers in the preferences like I've read about in other postings and although that may have helped slightly, it never seems to make a real difference and many times just makes it worse.

Does anyone have any idea what to do? Is there a way to kind of estimate what those number settings should be in preferences?

Thanks for whatever help you can offer.

This sounds like the irq problems that have been covered numerous times in the Vegas and VF forums. Search for irq and you should find a bunch of info that'll help.

I have checked the irq's on my system and there do not seem to be any conflicts.

I've made sure that both my hard drives have DMA enabled.

I checked my BIOS settings per one of the forum recommendations for a K7T motherboard.

All this stuff checks out but I still have the problem of flickers, picture loss and black or white boxes in a checkerboard pattern when I try to print to tape.

Can anyone point me down another path?

I'm posting this in hopes that it will help others down the road. As it turns out, I had a bad firewire cable. I swapped my cable out for another cable and it took care of all my problems ... video/audio being dropped, blocks being dropped from my video image, etc.

So, if you've been banging your head like I have over this for the past 2 months, try swapping out the cable early and see if that makes a difference.
