print to tape - I'm about to throw this out and go to "Edit DV"

O.K. This is day three of trying to print to tape. I have an edited video about 2 1/2 minutes long. It took about 8 times for it to render. Previous attempts had the file at over 4GB (How I don't know). I have finally gotten the file to render at a more reasonable size, but now when trying to print to tape using Vegas Capture, all I can see is part of the picture. I get a mainly blank screen, with "windows" of the final edit project showing through. I have tried rendering in many different formats, I've tried different compression types., and still just like a few puzzle pieces of the actual video showing through a grayish screen. HELP!!!!

tell us more ..
1)what format was the original clips ? dv ?

2) when you rendered you choose to render as ? dv , sounds like you choose uncompressed video ?

3) what are you exporting to ? dv camera/deck ? analog camera/deck -vhs ??

4) what capture card are you using ?

if originla clips were DV and you are going back to dv
then when you render you should be using the DV template ...also make sure that
when you open a new project that you have DV template choosen as default ...

Original format was DV, using a Sony Mini Digital.
I have tried rendering all different ways. No compression, with all different types of compression.
I am exporting to the same Digital camera (Sony digital TRV-20)
I have the template selected at all phases. Why would the print to tape only give bits of the actual video.

Try defragging your video drive...and re-rendering the project. I had a similar problem, and defragging was the answer.

You have to render as DV.

If you are not sure about settings - when
creating new project you can "extract" settings from one of your capture files.
There is button on the right top side of dialog box to do it.

Rendered avi must have same settings
e.g. NTSC DV, 720x480, interlaced, B-field

Also from performance point of view - your
PC should be fast enough to feed camera
with 25Mb/s. So you need min ATA33 hard drive.
Unfragmented - the best if it is dedicated only to your video, and has no system files on it.

I haven't had single problem printing to tape ever.

I am not sure why, but even if I preview on external monitor(monitor being Sony DV camera) I get the same results, before even trying to print to tape. I did not "tweak" any settings, until I failed to print the first time. This program is not as user friendly as the one I have at home.

This sounds like a system problem, and I had the problem myself at one point. More specifically, I'm betting your 1394 card is on the same irq as the soundcard or scsi. The 1394 card ideally has its own, dedicated irq. There have been many posts about how to remedy this, so search this forum for "irq"

you mentioned edit dv...if you have a edit dv card then that could be problem ??

you have not mentioned what card you are using ??

I have an OHCI card. Edit DV is on my system at home. And it works mush better at least as far as the print to tape function is concerned. My OHCI card is manufactured by Belkin.

windows me,
vegas 3.0,
pinnacle dc10 AV vid.card

Vegas captured from analog VHS without dropping frames and proceeded to edit perfectly (perfectly!) But I can't print back out to my analog VCR. Two days later I'm stumped and this project is due in the morning.

Thanks in advance.
