Print to tape mystery

I've done a search and can't find this exact issue, so here we go.

If I use the Video Capture, Print to Tape tab, Vegas complains that there is no camera attached (actually, it either throws errors including something to the affect of a "missing message", or simply doesn't make the "cue device" or "print to device" buttons work). However, video capture works fine.

And printing to tape from the Vegas time line works fine, too.

Camera: Sony TRV-17, Adaptec (TI) Firewire card. Vegas 4.0 (Build 114).

I could swear that this used to work at one point, but after a hard disk replacement and re-registration of both Vegas 4.0 and VV3, neither's vidcap PTT works. VV3c's error claims the .AVI is not the correct format to print to tape (yet the .AVI is rendered as standard, compliant DV and indeed from the timeline prints with no rendering).

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Bob.

Is anyone from SoFo monitoring this forum that would like to comment on this?
Thanks,
Bob.

Thanks, kam! Does this work for everyone else? It used to work for me (with VV3).

Guessing, if capture works but not print to tape, and the files and all are cool, then maybe something's missing in the registry to tell windows and Vegas to use the card and drivers etc?

I'm assuming the prob happened after changing some stuff around... I've had prob. with Vegas 4 not doing all it should writing to the registry on install. I haven't read confirmation of this sort of thing here in forum, but have seen a bit about folks having to do a complete uninstall/removal of Vegas and then after reboot a fresh install.

And windows itself can get sticky, holding onto portions of old drivers and stuff, inserting perhaps some earlier driver files for the firwire card when you did the hardware swapping.

Might want to remove and reinstall the card - physically as well in a new slot if that's not a hassle - making sure that the latest drivers are used during install, and maybe if you want to go for broke, actually checking if the driver files you want are in fact installed and in use by checking the driver files in the device properties in device manager against those in the driver install package.

"but have seen a bit about folks having to do a complete uninstall/removal of Vegas and then after reboot a fresh install."

Same sort of "this does not compute" PTT probs were cleared up for me when SoFo Support insisted that I not only UNINSTALL PROGS for all SoFo, but actually open Explorer and delete the SoFo files (which remain after Uninstall).

Donno why, but then reinstalled and reregistered V4 and everything worked fine after that! Good luck. Grob

Thanks, grob and Mikey!

I had replaced my hard drives (after the first IBM DeathStar began to cough) and used partition magic to stretch the partitions onto their new, roomier digs. That's when I found out I had to do a complete uninstall/reinstall (VV3, Vegas 4, and DVDA) of all the SoFo apps. I did not do the reboot between uninstall and reinstall.

This may explain the common behavior between VV3 and Vegas 4's symptoms on this issue. Still, it's odd that PTT works fine from the timeline. Only when you drag .AVI files to the PTT tab of Vidcap is there an issue.

I'll try the uninstall/reinstall method.

Thanks again,
Bob.

After updating to DVDA 1.0c and VV4.0b, the problem went away.

Life is good again!
