Print to tape = skippity skip skip!

So usually everything works fine. I got vegas 4.0(latest build, etc. etc.).
I have the video capture that downloads with that version...so I assume it is also the latest.

Normally when I print back to my mini-DV camcorder, it works fine (through IEEE 1394 / firewire).
BUT, I recently have made my longest video yet. It's about 22:30 in length...and Vegas mixed it down to one .AVI file...hi quality, etc.

SO, when I print this avi to tape, it seems to have worked fine. At the end of the 22:30, I take the tape up and play it - to make sure it's worked. I've tried 3 times now, and each time the audio skips for AT LEAST 10 seconds, starting around 16:30.....sometimes the audio skips for up to 30 seconds! This is always the case, and I can't seem to find the problem. Is it that my computer is doing some scheduled task every 16 min. or something? and that interfieres with the firewire busniess??

I can't seem to figure it out...

any ideas?

and by the way... the .avi file is fine.

You running Win98? or WinME? 16:30 is close to the point where it hits the 4 GByte limit and has to go to the next file.

hmmm. I was unaware of a limit! haha. I'm running XP - and the entire video is just ONE .avi file...It very well could be over 4 GB. I'll check it and post what it is.

Are you doing 24p? If you are that could be the issue. I had somehting ike this come up and it drove me nuts because the file it self was fine. It was only a PTT issue with 24p. Here was the solution as provided by SFo/Sony :

======
I'd recommend rendering your project to 24p DV using 2-3 pulldown, and then use the capture/print tool to print the rendered file to tape. That way, the pulldown is being adding during the render and not during the print. The capture/print utility will see the file as a regular 60i DV file.

hmmm, I'll try doing this mixdown too. the file was over 4 gig...i think near 5... is this a problem? how can i fix it, but keep the video going smooth still?
Anyway i'll let you know if anything works... Thanks guys.

If your file is over 4GB and is still all in one file then you must have your drive formatted for NTFS and you won't have any 4GB problems.

It is formatted in NTFS actually, XP just came like that already...so it was perfect. I actually do audio recording (a lot of it), so I have a lot of stuff tweaked for audio, pro/multiple soundcards, etc.... so I'm out of ideas though...I think i've done everything I can think of.

BTW - I tried mixing down to that 24i DV file, and it ended up skipping quite often (the AVI actually skipped this time)....

anymore ideas???

Alright guys, i've tried everything now. It all SEEMS to be in correct order....and I even bought another 256MB of ram!! (making a total of 768)....SOOOOOOOOO what can i do here?!

WHY does it keep skipping? this time, it was from about 15:20 - 16:00. Again, the FILE is fine, but when I print back to my camera it is not.

I tried inserting 2-3 pulldown, and when I did THAT, the actually FILE skipped all over the place - just randomly - and for about 5 sec. each time.

should i try that 2-3-2-3 puill down? ANY other ideas?? I can't think of what can be wrong!

I once had a similar problem (AVI file OK, print to tape always created an audio skip at around 30 seconds). It turned out to to be the tape. So maybe try another tape?

If it's not the tape, another thing to try is using Scenalyzer Live (an excellent and very reliable DV capture/printing utility) for printing to tape. I use it exclusively for all my upload/printing. Download available here:

Note: I'm a satisfied user of Scenalyzer, no other connection. Good luck. Let us know when you crack this tough nut.

at the risk of simplicity, have you defragged? turned off all other applications? Networking killed? Firewire bridge disabled in Network connections?
