The only one I am familiar with is the EZCD Printer for $399.00. I think it is
made by Epson. It prints directly onto the dvd or cd. You can purchase this
printer at DiscMakers. Their web address is www.discmakers.com. I don't own one but plan on purchasing one soon.
Neato has "core" labels which fit in the center of the disc. They don't come off or upset the balance of the spinning disc. The website also has downloadable templates for Photoshop, Illustrator, Corel Draw, Word, etc. or you can use the MediaFace software they sell.
Over here in Oz, they are ridiculously expensive - I used their complete set - Adhesive label, Jewel sleeve and Jewel case tray liner on a CD Rom project ...
Cost (Aussie dollars): One CD disc, using laser technology $0.70
Three pieces of paper from Neato ...$3.00
We asked the sales manager at Western Canada's largest tape/DVD duplication facility what they use to label DVDs and learned they use Avery 8692 White CD/DVD labels. These labels are not as sticky as Neato or other Avery products so the glue does not shrink. TO test I put an 8692-labeled DVD outside at -40 for an hour, brought it in to thaw then played it no problem. Next, into the oven at 100 degrees for an hour. Cooled, played it. Still not convinced, we left it in a PC playing the menu motion background for a day. DVD still worked. Since then I have used the labels on a couple of hundred discs with nary a problem. I am convinced the combination of sticky glue and heavy weight paper is what makes standard Neato and Avery labels turn DVD-Rs into coaster, Lord knows we made our share at 10$ each before adopting the 8692s.
Check out the Epson Stylus Photo 960. I believe they are now shipping with the CD/DVD printing attachment. If you get one without it, the attachment is free via mail from Epson!
I have the EZCD Printer Plus and like it very much.
The only complaint with EPSON printers are they are hard to keep clean.
After about 20 disks, or long idle periods, you need to clean the heads
manually or the color turns darker.
HP has the nozzles in the ink cartridge but they don't have CD trays.
Color is very good but the PLUS version has smaller ink storage so you end up
driving to the office supply store more often.
I use RITEK media for DVD and TrueSilver (ProDisk?) CD's from Rima.com
