Pro 8 won't boot

jazzmaster wrote on 10/11/2008, 8:20 PM
When I boot Pro8 it hangs up and stops. I can release it by, oddly enough, hitting ctr-Alt-Del and even ctr-alt without the delete. It then jumps from task to task (I do not end task). Has anyone else had this trouble and, if so, how did you solve it. Re-input the software?
Couldn't find any answers in knowledge base.
Thanks

I used to have 6 hang when I had the camera hooked up and on. I would have to terminate the process, and turn off the camera and wait for the port to be released before I could load Vegas again. Once it loaded, I could then turn the camera on and all was well.

The moral? Unplug any USB or firewire devices (even the cords) and see if it loads. If so, one by one, plug them back in and see which one is the culprit. That may or may not help you. Hopefully it does.

Can you tell, by the progress bar on the splash screen during start-up, where it hangs? I mean, which process is it hanging on? (eg; creating audio engine, creating windows, initializing UI...etc.) If you knew where it was hanging, and it was hanging up on this process each time you started the app, then maybe Sony tech support would have more to go on to help you resolve this issue.

But maybe you should try to uninstall and reinstall it (if you haven't done that already). The other thing you might try is to roll back to version 8b, or even 8a, and try those.

Just some random thoughts...

Well, I re-booted the software and it still hangs up--on 1. Creating audio engine, 2. DirectX plug-in, 3. VST plug-ins, 4, .NET and 5. Creating Windows. I can get by it as I have been doing by hitting crt-alt each time it hangs, but I don't want to keep on doing that. I'll submit it to Sony. thanks.

jazzmaster Do you mean that when your splash screen is on and it says creating audio engine it just sits there and will not move forward at all? My Pro 8 on my computer does the same thing. I was thinking it was just my computer it's getting old. This may sound strange but as long as I sit here and left click my mouse button it will continue on, but if i start my Pro 8 and then go get coffee and return it will not have moved at all. I would love to hear what Sony says on that.

What version is this, and has it been the same with 8a, 8b & now 8c?

OH...and what happens if you turn off the splash screen in the Options tab? I suppose it would just hang without any indication of progress?
The Kid wrote on 10/12/2008, 9:58 AM
It does this with my 8b and 8c

Got the same issue with 8b and 8c.
No idea at all?

Thanks in advance for help,

Try disabling Net Notify or unplugging the network cable.

I believe the problem that doing the above would bypass was fixed several releases back but still worth a try.

Hi Bob,
nothing helped...
Is there a reg key where I can disable Net Notify before starting Vegas?
Vegas hangs while splah screen shows "creating windows". The task manager hangs at that moment also and I have to reboot the computer.

The problem would only show up if you had the computer connected to a network but there was no internet connection. From that I'd assume simply unplugging the network cable would clear the problem and get Vegas to load.
If you've tried unplugging the network cable or disabling the network connection then my suggestion is probably completely on the wrong track.

Other possibility. Vegas by default opens the last project. If somehow that project file was corrupted it could cause Vegas to crash / do wierd things. If you know what the last project you worked on was you could try moving it to a different folder or renaming it, that'd prevent Vegas from opening it and might get you going.

Hi Bob,

I disabled all internet connections. And I disabled the option to load the last project at the first time Vegas started.

Thank you for all your advice,
Wolfgang

You guys can always try holding

SHIFT+CONTROL while starting Vegas. This is supposed to reset all Vegas settings to default status.
casikmeier wrote on 10/14/2008, 4:33 AM
Even that did not work.
I testes Vegas Pro 8a,b,c
I deinstalled/installed .NET Framework
I deinstalled WinXP SP3

nothing helped.

But Vegas 7 works fine ...

Thanks in advance,
Wolfgang

Having tried the simple things it gets harder.
It could be a hardware problem, unlikely I know but you need to narrow down the possible causes. It could also be a munged registry entry. There's two ways to try to fix this.

You could try the way support suggest, uninstall all Sony products and delete all registry entries that reference them then re-install your Sony applications. Support could give you more explicit instructions but if you are confident enough to try that approach you likely know what to do anyway.

The other approach is to clone your system disk. Then do a clean install of Windows. Then install V8. If it still doesn't work you have a hardware problem, when you find and fix that you can restore your cloned image.

Or you could also start by trying running some system diagnostics. RAM is the cause of many problems. If you're running other largish apps or games on this PC without problems then it's unlikely to be RAM. Power supplies are another cause of problems but while Vegas is loading it isn't taxing things that much compared to V7 rendering.

Sorry none of the above is overly specific, I've never had any version of Vegas fail to load and even if I did my problems might well not have the same cause as yours.

If you can wait then lodging a support call would be wise. State specifically at what point in the load process it goes wrong. With some knowledge of the detailed process they might be able to narrow down where to look.

The tool that I usually go to in such situations is Process Monitor from Microsoft. Run that, instruct it to monitor the Vegas executable file and find out what it is waiting on. Let us know the results.

One other thing I would do is to make sure you have all the pre-requisites such as the correct version of the .NET Framework, DirectX run-time, and QuickTime.

First of all I'm happy with all your advice and help.

The Vegas support sovled it !!!!!!!!!

The solution is simple but I cannot imagine why....
Vegas has to be set into the exception list of the WinXP DEP (Data Execution Prevention). That's all!
But why Vegas started along until to the creation of windows without the WinXP DEP popup - I cannot understand ....

But it works!!!!!!

Sincerely,
Wolfgang

SO HOW DO YOU DO THAT. SONY SUPPORT HASN'T EVEN ANSWERED ME YET! Schlunks!
casikmeier wrote on 10/17/2008, 3:22 AM
I asked the german support ...

I am experiencing what sounds like the same problem. Vegas 8.0c loads to the point where the splash screen reports 'Creating Windows', and a partial window is created, but then the system is hung to the point that I must power off to reset. I have removed and installed Vegas (multiple times) and DEP is disabled on my system. Are there any further suggestions anyone can make?

Thanks....
