Where was the video file captured from or originated? If you used a proprietary codec, Vegas won't be able to read it, altho that's fairly rare.
Studio Max can output any number of file formats. What you want is an avi that's either uncompressed, or uses the Microsoft DV codec, or the Main Concept DV codec, or the Canopus codec for the easiest use. You can also output sequential TGA's which look great, or 32 bit avi, which contain an alpha channel.

You didn't really answer Spot's questions so that's why thread has been quiet.

Are these AVIs DV?

Did you capture them?

Do you know what compressor was used?

Give us some more information and someone will be able to help I am sure.
