Problem Dragging Clips into Vegas 8

I am running an older version, Vegas 8. I have video from an sd card copied to my windows 10 computer. The files were in MTS format. I converted them to several formats using Movavi video converter. MP4 clips will not drag into vegas 8 and I can only add 40 mpg2 clips after that the program crashes. Any ideas on what I should do?

Vegas 8 is an obsolete 32 bit program that isn't designed to run on Windows 10.
Don't bother with 8.1, you are likely to have an aneurism.
Thus your system memory observations.

You need QuickTime version 6.2 or 6.0 to open AVCHD, mp4, mov, tif, etc. in Vegas 8; even then, support for High Profile sources is incomplete, and preview performance is abysmal. Quicktime 7.x will not work. Third party converters are a crap shoot, but conversion in GoPro Studio is a recognized means of improving timeline and preview performance.

Download links for older QT and iTunes can be found here. Be sure to disable automatic updates!

For those reasons, an upgrade to Vegas Pro 13 should be considered.
